Polyps is a mass of tissue formed by an abnormal increase in the number of cell in a focal area of the mucous membrane. Polyps can develop on any part of the mucous surface, but they appear more frequently in the colon, uterine cavity, in the accessory sinuses in the part of the pharynx behind and above the soft palate, and the nose.

They occur mainly in children.

Polyps of the colon appear commonly in males. Colonic polyps are classified between benign and malignant.

Polypoid growth in the uterus usually occur in women of middle age. It is rarely malignant.

Polyps appearance and composition depends on the site where it grow. It sizes, ranges from .04 to 2.4 inches (1-6 mm.).

Symptoms of Polyps :

  1. A nose obstruction, blocking the entrance of air while breathing.
  2. In the intestine, polyps cause constipation because they stop food which is being processed.
  3. The same thing happen with the feces when it occurs in the colon or rectum.


Causes of Polyps :

  • Hereditary
  • Improper diet
  • Allergies (when it appear in the nose).

  • Vitamin C helps in the elimination of polyps.
  • Vitamins A and E helps protect the tissues of the body membranes.
