The Pomeranian is a toy breed dog which is popular as show dog and as a pet. This sturdy, vivacious animal was first bred in England. Pomeranian is a member of the Spitz family, descended from the sled dogs of Iceland. Originally a larger dog, it was first known as a sheepherder in northern Germany, especially Pomerania region, from which it received its name. The toy version was bred in England in the late 19th century.
Teacup Pomerarian, these Poms weigh less than 3 lbs, it is important to know that there is no official "teacup" variety of Pomeranian, so a Poms that weighs 3lbs or less is likely to have health problems.
Characteristic: Pomeranians are generally alert and loyal, but also stubborn and demanding of attention. They also have a very happy and lively personality that is why this breed tends to be a great show dog. Once trained, they will be a standout in the show ring, because they truly enjoy the limelight and love to be watched.
Physical Appearance: Pomeranian is characterized by its foxlike face. They have a very large ruff (collar like fur) around the neck that is an important part of their overall appearance. Their necks are short and they carry their heads quite high.
- Built: Short compact body
- Eyes: Their eyes are dark and almond shaped and very bright and alert in appearance.
- Ear: Very small and erect and are mounted high on the head.
- Coat: It has a soft fluffy undercoat and an outercoat or top coat, the first is soft, thick, and fluffy; the latter is long, straight and coarse. The undercoat is shed once a year by males, and in females when they are in season, after delivering a litter, and during times of stress.
- Weight: The Pomeranian is the smallest of the northern breeds. Pomeranian generally weighs about 3 to 7 pounds (1.4 - 3.1 kg), although the ideal size for show dogs is 4 to 5 pounds (1.8 - 2.2 kg).
Grooming:
- Coat. A Poms coat doesn't need a regular trimming. Combing is also seldom necessary, although combing can help maintain the shine in their coat and it can also help in the blood circulation
- Ear and Nail. Regular ear and nail care is necessary.
- Bathing. It is not advisable to bathe Pomeranians too frequently because excessive bathing can damage their skin and coat by removing essential oils, especially if using anti-flea products.
- Brushing of teeth. Pomeranians are also prone to teeth problems, and it is recommended that their teeth be brushed at least once a week.
Common Health Problems of Pomeranian:
- Dry eye (like tear duct disorders), Teeth problem, Alopecia, Hypothyroidism, Hypoglycemia, Epilepsy.
- Cataract - this can even appear in young adulthood and often lead to blindness.
- Skin Diseases - especially allergies that often lead to acute dermatitis.
Life Span: Generally Poms often live for about 12-19 years, but some very healthy Poms have even been known to live past 20 years of age or more.
