It's hard to believe that the tiny Pomeranian dogs we know today were once around 30 pounds in weight. Hailing from Pomerania, this spitz type dog was indeed much larger at one time.. Queen Victoria was a big fancier of Pomeranians and it is she that is credited with their popularity in late 1800's England.. However today These dogs are mostly bred as loving companions and show dogs.

A member of the AKC Toy Group, the Pomeranian dog breed was recognized in 1888 and gained it's regular classification in 1900. The standard height for this dog is between seven and 12 inches and weight is between three and 7 pounds. With the right food and veterinary care, you can expect a lifespan of 15 years for this dog.

The Pomeranian has a fox like look with a wedge shaped head, pointed ears and fluffy fur. With an intelligent expression, the Pom has dark, almond shaped eyes that twinkle, a nose that is dark or matches their coat and teeth that meet in a scissors bite. The tail is a plume that fans forward on the back. The dense coat creates a large ruff on the neck and chest. According to breed standards, the coat can be solid or parti colored. Allowed colors for the Pomeranian are Black, brown, blue, cream, white, orange and red.

Intelligent and eager to please their owners, Pomeranian dogs are very loyal to their families. But these eager dogs can also be a bit temperamental and willful at times. You must treat your Pomeranian firmly to let them know who is boss or they could end up ruling the roost.

Pomeranians have an affectionate and docile nature which makes them perfect pets as well as show dogs. Showing exceptional independence for a small dog, the Pomeranian has an alert and curious personality. It is a good dog if you live in an apartment. Though quite active indoors they do not need a yard to be exercised.

Poms may be prone to eye infections, dislocated patella, skin problems, slipped stifle and heart problems. They also have problems with their teeth so you must brush the teeth at home as well as see the vet yearly for a cleaning.

The Pomeranian dogs crowning glory is his double coat which does require daily grooming. The coat should be brushed forward, starting at the head and parting it as you go. The undercoat which has a cottony feel sheds usually once or twice a year. Other daily grooming activities including cleaning the ears and around the eyes.

I never thought the Pomeranians are these cute! I came across a site with all those cute Pomeranian pictures before but I never put some special attention in them, that being my favorite breed is the Great Dane. Now, I know why my neighbor has his own 2 Pomeranians and he's even trying to convince me to have one. He has every reason why he put those pictures of his Sandy & Jill in his Pomeranian Checks. Maybe I'll try to take a closer look at Pomeranians next month. Thanks for the eye-opener!

Poms are some of the cutest little guys, but nothing beats out my Maltese, Houdini!
