As for getting there are plenty of cycle-rickshaw taxis available, or just get a bike and cycle yourself.

According to some historians, the town was once called Vedapuri and was a head of vedic culture.Additionally, it was the abode of Sage Agastya. The Pallavas ruled the city in the 4th centry and the Pandayas dominated in the 13th century.

After that the Vijayanagar empire ruled until 1638, when the Sultan of Bijapur took over. It was not until 1674 that Francois Martin, the French governor, began to build Pondicherry and altered it from being a little fishing village to becoming a flourishing port-town.

Another French govenor, Dupleix (1742-1754) ambitiously enlarged french control in India but his dreams were shattered by a certain Robert Clive, a dare-devil British officer, who flounced Dupleix and brough an end to the french desire to have a colonial empire based in India.
