One of the highly anticipated Tamil movie releases for Pongal 2009 is "Asal" with Ultimate Star Ajith playing the lead role. He is said to appear in a dual role in this movie. Director Saran has given multiple hits with Ajith earlier with films like "Amarkalam" and "Attagasam". Bhavana and Sameera Reddy are playing the respective heroines for dual role Ajith. Yesteryear actor Suresh, who made his debut with Panneer Pushpangal in early 80s, makes his comeback as a baddie in Ajith Kumar’s upcoming film Asal. Earlier, the actor had tried his luck donning villain role in Srikanth-Bhavana starrer Kizhaku Kadarkarai Saalai that left him unnoticed. But, the actor is overwhelmed with Saran’s offer since his characterization is as powerful as the protagonist.

 Originally scheduled for Diwali 2009, Vettaikaran is another mass movie set to release for Pongal 2009.Vettaikkaaran  is  directed by débutante film director Babu Sivan. Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay and Anushka Shetty are in the lead roles. The film's music is composed by Vijay Antony while Gopinath is the film's cinematographer and V. T. Vijayan as the film's editor. After some flops like "Villu" and "Azhagiya Tamizh Magan", Vijay is expecting this movie to turn things around for his career and his fan base.

 Suriya’s ‘Singam’ is in the final stage of shooting and getting  ready for a pongal 2009 release. As of now the climax is being shot in a small village in Thiruchendur. To give a native touch to the scene, the team had erected an open air temple with a huge Ayyanar statue. Director Hari is very excited with this film after his flop movie with Barath "Seval" bombed at the box office. Director Hari is confident to make it big, as ‘Singam’ is being shot in his lucky locations like Kutralam, Thiruchendur and Tirunelveli.

 Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya is the next Simbu film scheduled to be released during pongal 2009. This Tamil film is directed by Gautham Menon, starring Silambarasan and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. Silambarasan as Niru and Trisha Krishnan as Jessica are joining hands for the first time. Simbu is acting for the first time with A R Rahman, th OScar award winner, as the music director. Other stars in the cast include K.S. Ravikumar and Uma padmanaban. Singam is directed by Hari and has Anushka playing Suriya’s lead. Suriya’s Aadhavan released for Diwali 2009 had Nayantara for the first time paired with Surya.

Karthi's Paiyya

Karthi with his Aayirathil Oruvan is also engaged in another big Tamil movie Paiya. The film is produced by Tripathy brothers and directed by Lingusamy. Tamanna is pairing with Karthi in this film. The film crew camps at Kerala to shoot one of the songs of the film, after which all that remains to be canned is the climax. The film is a road trip entertainer, and the shoots are taken at Mumbai, Banglore and Chennai. Paiya will give a good look to Karthi and he will look best in this film, after his ventures of Paruthiveeran and Aayirathil Oruvan. The music is scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and Milind Soman plays the role of villain in the film. Payya has more number of villains that any Tamil cinema had probably seen ever before. According to sources, this Lingusamy-directed film takes place in the Bangalore to Mumbai Highways and what happens in the process of the travel forms the crux of the story. Payya team says the film has more than a dozen of villains. Is it an out right action film like Lingu's previous hit "SandaKozhi"? possibly!

Thambikku Indha Ooru

Barath pairs up with Sana Khan for Thambikku Indha Ooru. Barath is involved with multiple flops one after another including films like "Arumugam", "Kanden Kadhalai", "Seval", "Pazhani" etc. Hope this pongal 2009 tamil movie does not follow the same trend.
