Origin Of Popcorn Machines

Popcorn machines have been around for ages. As early as the 18th century, popcorn machines existed in South America. The first popcorn makers were simple round containers with small holes and long handles which were used to hold them over fire. It is propagated that the method of making popcorns at that time involved heating sand until it was hot and then putting kernels in it so that the popcorns popped. Popcorn machines then evolved and became gas powered. At this time, the popcorn machines were huge and could be as wide as 7 feet.

Automatic Popcorn Machines

The first automatic popcorn machine was introduced in the late 19th century. Since then, they have formed a basic part of our daily life. Popcorn machines were first invented by Charles Cretors in Illinois, Chicago. Popcorn makers or popcorn machines as they are known were one of the first cooking appliances to be made that worked without well without too many complications at first try. With time, more designs and options have been added in the market.

The first popcorn machines were made to be mobile so that vendors could move around the streets selling popcorn. They were operated using steam power. Oil was used to pop the kernels. Then they were later improved so that they became gas powered. Mobile popcorn machines served in making popcorn incredibly popular. When cinemas were the rage, there was a high demand for popcorns. However, the coming of television made cinemas less popular since more people were now staying at home to watch TV instead of going to the movies. This decreased the demand for popcorns. In the 20th century Percy Spencer came up with the idea of making a microwave oven that could pop kernels. This made it possible for people to begin popping corns in their own homes.

Popcorn Machines Today

Currently, one can get popcorn makers to use for business or personal pleasure.

For personal pleasure, one uses makes popcorns when entertaining guests during social events or simply for personal consumption in their own homes. Some people find popcorn machines more convenient at home than microwaved popcorns since machines pop a lot more popcorn at a go. Having a popcorn machine, especially in your home theatre room, can make it very interesting for friends and relatives who are visiting. Watching TV or movies while eating popcorn is a popular past time for many people. This makes it more enjoyable to spend quality time with others.

There are different companies that make popcorn machines today. This means that there are different brands of machines available in the market. These machines are usually operated by gas or by electricity.

Red machines are the most popular machines. This is because of the good feelings they evoke of the past popcorn machines in the late 19th century and early 20th century which were red in colour.

The price of popcorn makers usually vary depending on a number of issues. These include the amount of popcorn that can be made by the machine. The more popcorn the machine is able to pop at a go, the more it will cost.

The other factor is whether the popcorn machine has a cart. Machines which have carts cost more than ones that do not.

Types Of Popcorn Machines

  • Hot air poppers- they use hot air and not oil to make the popcorn kernels pop. This makes it more profitable for popcorn vendors since it cuts down their oil requirements. These popcorn equipments can also be used at home. Most people prefer hot air poppers since they reduce fat and salt intake
  • Vending machines-Technology has it made it possible for you to simply insert coins in a popcorn vending machine, hold a bag underneath it and get fresh hot popcorns popping. What’s more, you can get butter and salt out of the vendor if you want. It is hard to tamper with these vending machines.
  • Oil poppers-these can be used at home or for commercial purposes. They are popcorn machines that use hot oil to pop the kernels.
  • Stovetop poppers- it has been used for a long period of time and it is still currently used today. Their main disadvantage is that they may cause your popcorns to overcook. The main design for stovetop poppers is fashioned in the classic style. There are different styles and sizes available which blend in well with other equipment in your house.
  • There are also other variations of counter top cooking methods for popcorn that allow a lot of flexibility in the amount of popcorn you want to make.

Some of the popular places that popcorn machines can be found include in movie theatres, carnivals, parks.

There is a museum specifically set up for popcorn makers since 1982: Wyandotte Popcorn Museum in Ohio. The museum boosts a lot of antique and refurbished popcorn machines that have been in use over the years. It was founded by Hoover Brown.

My family and I got a hot air popcorn maker last Christmas, and we use it religously every Saturday night with a good DVD. It's become a tradition, and it makes the best popcorn. Great hub man, thanks for the information.

Same here - popcorn is a sacred right in our house on the weekend. I'd love one of those fancier machines you have pictures of. Good - thanks.
