Popular Easter Dishes in Malaga Spain
77The Bull Ring of Malaga
Intriguing Spain
I have never traveled to Spain and know no one that has done so. However, I have become fascinated with the country for several reasons.
A couple I know married in a catered event that copied an entire bullfight. They hired a company to rent a stadium and put on a mock 18th century bullfight with actors portraying the King and Queen of Spain, the royal court, lesser royalty, and commoners in the stands as well - all in full costume. Wedding guests had been assigned parts. Royal trumpets and other musicians announced the agenda of the event, activity by activity, and it was unique and memorable. A royal feast followed for the reception. The photos were incredible.
The 1992 Olympics in Barcelona that featured the Catalan region of Spain grabbed my attention as well, presenting some of the history of Catalan Region and its singular language. The music and traditions worked into the opening and closing ceremonies were unforgettable, especially the "stacks" of humans -- towers made up of men standing on one another's shoulders in circles of decreasing size up to about 100 feet high. The Tree Tenors sang. I was hooked on Spain and began to read and talk to people about it. This interested me in Mexico and a renewal of my readings about that nation as well and I became more aware of Spanish and Mexican actors [Antonio Banderos - Malaga; Ricardo Montalban - Mexico City] and musicians, whom I had always admired.

Holy Week in Malaga - Semana Santa
I have been astounded with the history of Holy Week before Easter in Malaga, Spain and elsewhere in the southern region.
I was startled by the robes that reminded me of Ku Klux Klan uniforms I had seen, worn by Catholics in Malaga. I found that these were called nazareno robes of penance of several colors worn certain people walking in the parades or processions held during the week (photo below).
Each color denotes a particular procession and these robes were most widely worn during Medieval years, by those who might declare their penance openly, but masked to the population as a whole. The robes were purposely copied by the KKK, according to several sources and word of mouth.
The robed penitents carry candles or wooden crosses as they walk the streets, often barefoot. In some spots some carry heavy chains and wear them around their ankles. At the same time, celebrants along the route sometimes dress as Roman warriors of Christ's time. It is all quite startling as penitents also carry a heavy litter containing a figure of the Virgin Mary and another bearing a standing Christ carrying a cross. It is also reminiscent of Eastern religious processions with flowers and figures.

It is delicious with the three kinds of milk and rich tasting. You can add 2 tsp vanilla if you like and cook a bit longer.
Would love to visit Spain and Malaga. Do they also have the tomato throwing festival? I am fascinated with all the different food varieties in the world.
O Yes! Last Saturday of August, i.e. TODAY! haha, we're missing it.
I think it better to eat the tomatoes than to throw them lol
haha, you are correct, ajcor! I hate waste.
These are some delicious recipes.
I have been during Semana Santa in Malaga and I have witnessed the processions, to be honest it was a bit scary all those people in fancy “KKK” robes and even worst the people who punish themselves to the point of bleeding while walking on the procession. Certainly I rather just enjoy the food and wine during Semana Santa than go again to one of those processions!
Thanks for visiting, Princessa.
I know a little about what you mean - One character in the novel, The Davinci Code, did the self-flagellation to far extremes! I did not see the film becuase I did not wish to witness this,
What is creepiest to me is seeing the large litters the robed people carry with figures of the Virgin Mary and Jesus sitting or standing on them - and recalling deceased popes covered in wax. Brrrrrrr. Spine chilling.
It is creepy, as I said, for me the worst part was to see the self-flagellation. Mind you, carrying those saints is not easy job neither, one of those things can weight tons because of the materials used to model the saints and the silver and gold ornaments. What it is most amazing, is that it is very difficult to be accepted as a “carrier” you need to belong to "the fraternity" and even then is not easy to be chosen.
It is sounding more frightening all the time! I wonder if a horror novel has been written about this... Thankfully, we can make the food and skip the parades and processions if we want to do so.
We were fortunate enough to get to attend the opening ceremonies in Barcelona for the olympics and it was amazing! An experience we will never forget! Will have to write about some of our experiences in Spain...
Your recipes as always sound so good. You certainly put your heart and soul into your hubs.
Peggy -- How exciting that you were able to attend that event! I hoep you write about your trip and events very soon. Thanks for the kind words on my writings. A handful of words thrown down without thought is not enough imo. :)
Hi Patty yours is the first hubpage that I have visited and I was inspired by this page to do my own. I am English but living in Spain so I started with Semana Santa in Villajoyosa. Thanks for the inspiration. Maggie
