Homemade Pork Burgers

I always use Pork for my homemade Burgers as I don't eat red meat, but there is no reason why you couldn't make a Beef Burger and stuff it with Cheese in the same way I have here. Just substitute the Pork mince for Beef mince, the basic recipe will stay the same. This is a versatile recipe that is a cheap family meal when teamed with buns, chips and / or salad.

Homemade burgers are great for people who like to know exactly what goes into their food. Some shop bought burgers can be full of fat and salt and other nasties such as preservatives. When making your own, you know exactly what has gone into the burger and that you are eating a tasty, but healthy alternative.

Pork Burgers Stuffed With Cheese

Ingredients For Pork Burgers Stuffed With Cheese

500g Pork Mince

1 Large Egg

1 Medium Onion

40g Cheese (I used Jarlsberg, though Emmenthal would work good too, as would Mozzarella)

1 Heaped teaspoon of Paprika

1 Heaped teaspoon of Italian Seasoning (Oregano, Basil, dried Red Pepper, Marjoram, Thyme, Rosemary, Sage and Parsley)

1 Heaped teaspoon of English Mustard (though a grain mustard would work brilliantly)

1 Tablespoon of Honey

A generous pinch of Galic Salt and Black Pepper

To Begin

You need to fry the Onion first so that you don't end up with raw bits in the middle of the burger.

I like to dice the Onion and lightly fry in some butter until cooked through.

Then I put aside to add to my Burger mix later on when cooled.

Ingredients All Mixed Together

TOP TIP!

ALWAYS refrigerate the mixture for at least 10 minutes before you make the patties. I was in a hurry a while back and couldn't spare the time. Making the patties was not only one huge mess due to the mixture being so sticky, but the egg didn't bind them properly and when cooking the patties fell apart.

The Mixture

First of all, use a fork to make the Pork Mince into a smooth pulp. Then add the Herbs, Paprika, Honey, Mustard, Salt and Pepper and mix evenly.

If the Onion is cooled add that too and mix again.

Once everything is even through the mixture, add the Egg to bind.

Now For The Messy Bit!

Creating The Patties

Scoop half of one patty from the mixture and shape it as I have above, then add the sliced cheese. Push the cheese down on the half patty and then cover with the other half of the burger mix on top.

Versatile

Repeat getting half the mixture, placing the cheese and then covering and shaping until all the patties are made.

The great thing about making your own Burgers, aside from knowing exactly what's gone into them, is that you can size them exactly as you wish.

I made quite large ones, so I ended up with 4, but you could always make them smaller so you get a bigger batch.

I fried mine, but you could of course grill or barbeque them too.

Cook For 15-20 Minutes

Almost There

Add a little oil to the pan (I use Olive) and fry for 15-20 minutes turning occasionally.

The cheese will have melted slowly in the middle.

Done!
