Porsche. It is the name would-be wealthy people associate with riches. In truth, it is the name wealthy people themselves attach to luxury. Porsche’s presence in the movie industry bolsters that image. Movies such as Legally Blonde, Risky Business, Annie Hall, and The Big Chill have given Porsches lots of screen time. Even kids’ movies have gotten in on the action. Sally, the love interest in the movie Cars, was a Porsche 911-it does not get any better than that!
A Porsche is a highly visible demonstration of wealth and influence. In fact, a 2006 survey by the “Luxury Institute” in New York polled 500 people in the $200,000 plus income bracket who revealed Porsche to be the car name reflecting the most prestige. The company’s confident slogan, “There is no substitute,” says it all.
The German manufacturer got its start in 1931. Its founder, Ferdinand Porsche, was joined in the business by his son, Ferry, and together they created the first legendary models that are among the most sought after by car enthusiasts around the globe. The first car to actually bear the Porsche name came out in 1934 and was designated the Porsche 64. The most famous Porsche, the 911, came about three decades later in 1964, after the company had enjoyed much success on the race track. The 911 is still manufactured, although the only characteristics it shares with its earlier incarnations are the rear engine design, the six cylinder engine, and a few body details reminiscent of the first model.
Porsche has weathered the loss of Germany in World War II, unstable economies, and every fluctuation in the car market itself and has always managed to stay on top. Today’s Porsches are as in demand as ever. From roadsters to sedans to SUV’s, they remain a strong presence. Names like Boxster, Cayenne, and Cayman still raise eyebrows and inspire envy. If you want to show the world you have “arrived” you cannot announce it with any more surety than with the purchase of a Porsche.
