Portable Furnace Guide
70It used to be so nice to heat the entire house without having to get a second mortgage on the house. A portable furnace can be the answer to having a warm home without going into debt. With energy prices high and going only higher we need to do everything possible to try and cut back on the home heating bill. Using zone heat with a portable heating system can be just the ticket for staying warm this winter.
A portable furnace works like a regular furnace is the sense that the ari passed over heating coils and the heat is transferred before the air is moved around the room. This gives a nice warm feeling unlike static system that do not move the air around.
It is not uncommon for a portable furnace to be able to heat approximately an 800 sq foot room effectively. This would be a room 20 feet wide by 40 feet long which is bigger than a lot of houses.
So how much energy does a portable furnace use? Well if you are making coffee in a coffee maker you are using more electricity than a lot of heaters on the market today. One current model uses about 1500 watts which is less than most coffee makers. There is not much to break down in them either. Other than the whisper quiet small fan there is now moving parts in most of these small furnaces. The controls are usually solid state which means they won't wear out any time soon.
Place one of these in a corner or other out of the place and the room will soon be toasty warm and inviting. Imagine that instead of selling the car in order to fill up the oil tank or pay for that old furnace to suck up more electricity than you can pay for.
Do They Work?
We had a 2800 sq foot two story house that had been built in the 1920's. The living room was always cold unless we ran the natural gas furnace at full blast and cooked the rest of the house. When we move to a different place and rented this house out the new people purchased a portable furnace to put in the corner of the room. The cost was almost nothing but this room stayed warm no matter how cold it got outside.
