Portable tent kits are important when planning the best outdoor experience. The tent is going to be your outdoor "home" and therefore deciding the most appropriate tent is important. There is more than one type of portable tent available. Consider the follow factors before deciding which portable tent kit is the best option for your outdoor adventure.

Factors to Consider

Weight of the tent - How often and how far does the tent need to be carried?

Size - How many people need to fit in the tent?

Durability - Through what weather conditions does the tent need to go through.

Warmth - Does the tent require extra thick material for cold weather?

Prices

Expect the most ultra light tents to costs upwards of up to 300 dollars. The MSR Titanium Zoid 1.5 weighs 2 pounds but costs $400 and is only designed for short stays. At the cheaper side, heavier full size tents can be purchased for as little as $20 and value chain superstores like Wal-Mart.

Alternatives to a Tent

Some sleeping bags are designed to be used without a tent. They are fully enclosable and offer a screen for air flow. They protect against insects, but not very well against rain. These are usually referred to as a Bivy. The Black Diamond Lightsabre Bivy 1 person ultralight all-purpose bivy weighs just over one pound and costs $179.

Tarps provide adequate shelter against rain and animals. They are light and quick to setup. They are perfect for setting up over sleeping bags. The Snow Peak Ponta Tarp weights less than one pound and can be setup in minutes. On the downside, tarps provide little protection against insects. Combining a Bivy and a Tarp is a good way to protect yourself against rain and insects.
