Portuguese Music
76Music Of Portugal. And One American
Living in Portugal means I'm exposed to Portuguese singers/songwriters/groups. Being Brtitish by birth means I was raised on a smorgasbord of different music ... and developed a very broad taste. I was also trained in ballet from the age of 2 through to 16 years of age and along the way I picked up a fondness for classical music also.
But ... this is about Portugal and what I've encountered in terms of music. So, come listen to two or three of my favourite Portuguese performers. Mayhap you will have your ears opened ...
And I make no apologies for the last one in the list. He's not Portuguese. He's American. But ... 'tis my article and I'll write what I want to ...
NB - my hub. I reserve. My Rights. To plaster what I like within it. Taking into account TOS and yadda yadda. No porn or filth. I know. And there is none. Frog guarentee.
Amalia Hoje - A Gaivota
The Gift
The Gift are a modern group that usually sing in English. However - the song that moves me the most is this one ... and it's sung in Portuguese. They've sung in many countries, the USA and the UK to name but two. They've shared the stage with the likes of Coldplay, Moby and Radiohead.
Since I found HubPages and discovered Frieda Babbley - the lead singer always reminds me of her. If Frieda ever sang a song, I'd imagine her singing this one - with the same beauty, drama and grace as the lead singer, Sónia Tavares, possesses ...
The song is a tribute to the most famous of Portuguese Fado singers, Amelia Rodrigues (now deceased) and is a wonderful homage to her talent and captivating life. And ohhhh how I love listening to it ...
The chorus:
Que perfeito coração - The perfect heart
No meu peito bateria, - Beats in my chest
Meu amor na tua mão, - My love is in your hand
Nessa mão onde cabia - This hand where it fits
Perfeito o meu coração - Is perfect for my heart
Turn your speakers up and absorb ... superb...
Blasted Mechanism. Karkov
Blasted Mechanism
Blasted Mechanisim are classed as an electro-pop band and, in their own words, they 'happened' rather than intended to become what they have. The costumes are as much a part of the band as the music and lyrics and certainly give the group an otherwordly air - almost extraterrestrial (Lxxy - this one's for you!) in appearance.
Whenever I listen to them, I always hear undertones of reggae, interspersed among the tribal drum beats and electronic ravings that spring forth from the guitars. Wonderfully original and hugely entertaining ...
Oh and this particular video isn't in English but it's my hub and I like this ... *whistles and stares at the ceiling ...*
Tony Carreira. Porqué E Que Vêns
Tony Carreira
Ummm - maybe it's an age thing ... I'm not sure ... but I just adore Tony Carreira. He's like a wonderful blend between Elton John and Julio Iglesias. His lyrics are full of depth and meaning, he has a great on-stage presence yet - unlike Elton *snickers* - he's sexy and appealing.
He is Portuguese by birth but left his home country when he was three and was raised in France - where he stayed until he was 20 years of age. He's been on the music scene proper (in Portugal) since the early nineties and has a huge following here. In terms of success, he's probably the most successful of the singers here and even his son Michael is now persuing a career in music.
Frog fact - I found out he was round the corner where I was one day and Simões wouldn't take me to see him. He probably knew I'd show myself up - hollering and slavering ...
Understandbale. Because I would've shown the Portuguese what hollering and slavering over a pop star really means.
You Got It
I Drove All Night
Roy Orbison. Hehehe ...
I know I know - Roy isn't Portuguese. But like I said, I reserve the right and all that. Well now I'm exercising it.
Roy Orbison is a particular favourite of mine. Along with Johnny Cash, R.E.M, ABBA, Meatloaf and a good few more. But Roy is up there, high in my frogaspere and I've always loved his music. His voice truly was unique and his style of delivery the same.
I know Cash was the man in black but for me... Roy was the king of shades and dark attire. I can listen to him for hours and hours. And hours.
And this video is dedicated to Simões. My wonderful partner in slime - he makes my world whole (and a little bit like a parade ground "Sim, meu Sargento!") and this will always be - for me - our song.
The second one is another I love. I drove many a mile with it blasting through my car stereo, in the past ... driving away the cobwebs ...
To all you guys out there - remember - it's 'make love, not war' ... and to Simões ... nham nham ...
Edit
I had to edit. Realised I'd got the videos mixed up and You Got It didn't show up, plus I had a now defunked version of Drove All Night loaded. Sorry ... now corrected but with Cyndi Laupers' version of Drove All Night because I can't find Roys'.
Even Frogs make mistakes. Very Occasionally.
I also though it a great idea to have Frieda Babbley as a keyword. She was interviewed in this weeks' hubpages newsletter so I figure that's a positive step towards Google fame.

Irohner - lol yep. Roy Orbison. One of my greats. I have a few ;)
To be honest I listen to a very broad range of music and would struggle to create a shortlist ...
Loved the first song --- the second one is a HOOT! -- and I see (hear) what you mean about Tony Carreira. I love the sound of Portuguese, always have. Thanks for this great introduction to current trends in Portugal.
Teresa - hey :) and lol but I do have a 'thing' for Tony Carreira. And he seems such a gentleman too! But the first one gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.
Great first music hub Frog!! I never knew you were a Roy fan ;) All I can think of when I see his name is "Pretty Woman"
lol
The first video, Amalia Hoje, the song...pure beauty. I enjoyed listening and reading your hub. I will have to look into this new genre of music. Nice.
Frogdropping,...Don't know how google rates their idea of fame,..But I rate you famous even though your green and all,..LOL. I just love your hubs, you are so entertainingly great !!!!
This was froggilicious as usual... I see what you mean about the reggae influence in the Blasted Mechanism. I learn that the Frog is sentimental! Who would have thought?????
Loved Cyndi and Roy, I didn't know of him, but I know the song. Nice musical taste. Loved it...
Love them all...but Blasted Mechanism is fo'sho right cool. ;)
Ooooh why haven't I heard of Tony Carreira before? Thank you for that introduction FD!!!
It's the second one you should appologize for, not the last one. The mechanism of idiocy. I know lxxy liked it but thats his part of the business.
No, I'm not really serious. I hated them all. :)
No, don't believe me. I certainly do like this music like... I do. Music is music, which I like.
Janetta - it was a very lazy music hub. Which is why I reserved my rights. And exercised them ...
Ethel - lol back at ya :)
AIDY - I can listen over and over to The Gift. That song is pure sensation :)
AIM - ahhh fame is a fickle thing indeed. I dub you my one and only SooperFan :) Thankyou. Welcome to the Club of One!
Dynamic - yup I'm a little wet around the edges. It's an amphibian thing. Probably. And thankyou. Frogalicious indeed!
lxxy - Blasted Mechanism are just plain nuts ...
Feline - Tony Carreira is delicious. And I don't care who knows it. He's really very yummy. Sings nice too :)
Haunty - you do. You don't. You do. Do you know? I do. You're having a moment. Blasted Mechanism are a bit weird to be honest. And noisy. And really very quiet off stage and declothed.
You'll get over it ;)
FD
I like Spanish guitar - is it in any way similar to Portuguese music? What?! Oh right, there are youtube links! above! Sowee! :D
Btw, did you know that Magellan discovered the Philippines?
Cris - Do please tell me you enjoyed The Gift :)
And I knew Magellan had been about a bit. Vasco da Gama too ... And hey by the way!
the videos that you added to the hub make the hub look more beautiful and for the music lovers like me will always drag us to listen to those videos
swathin - thankyou :) I genuinely enjoy some of the music I've found here - especially Fado.
