Post Nasal Drip Bad Breath: Introduction

Post nasal drip bad breath, a fairly complicated sounding set of words with an unfortunately all too unpleasant connotation for the persons who may be suffering from it. In a sense it is a combination of two unpleasant issues and problems, each one on its own already leads to the need by some people to seek relief or solutions or treatment, but when they are both present in one person at the same time, they tend to feed off of each other resulting in a type of situation which is even more unpleasant for the person who is suffering.

Much information on this issue is available online at least. There are many websites and blogs available online which discuss and postulate regarding post nasal drip and bad breath and whether the former causes the latter or whether the latter is caused by the former or whether there is at least some form of relationship between the two so that having one may make it more likely that the other one will be present as well, and so on and so forth.

Perhaps a person may have bad breath or halitosis. Then that person will realize that there appears to be a lot more than usual phlegm at the back of his throat. The feeling may be thick back there, making him want to hawk it out or spit it out or find some other way to get rid of it or relieve it. Then that person might think to himself or herself that the presence of that thickness at the back of his throat may somehow be tied to his or her current experience of bad breath. He or she may theorize that the thickness back there of phlegm may very well be providing an environment which is conducive to bacteria, and that that bacteria may have some relationship to the existence of halitosis since that particular problem is also tied to the existence of bacteria which give off foul smelling compounds which lead breath to be rather smelly. Then that person may think that the increase in the amount of thickness back there may have something to do with the fact that he has a runny nose or something similar, causing some of what would normally be blown out of his or her nose to back stop and head down his or her throat instead.

That in a nutshell is what some websites and some blogs theorize is the relationship between post nasal drip and bad breath or halitosis. In a sense, where the one creates an environment which may very well set up an active breeding ground for bacteria, then the potential for having breath with an unpleasant odor is increased. Of course, as with many theories and claims on the internet this alleged theory must be scrutinized in light of what is scientifically and empirically known about how the physical anatomy works, and based on that whether such a mechanism and such a relationship makes sense physically. Only then can one begin to meaningfully check for what might be effective solutions for what is called post nasal drip bad breath.

Post Nasal Drip Bad Breath: Body

Assuming that post nasal drip bad breath does exist or that there is in fact a relationship between what is termed post natal drip and bad breath or halitosis, the next questions would revolve around possible treatments or remedies, perhaps home remedies, for such a situation. Many offerings and claims exist on the internet, which range from medication to certain modifications of diet and drinking, to certain oral practices such as gargling or better basic oral hygiene which includes the brushing of teeth and gums and the scraping of the tongue and so on and so forth. Many claims are made in relation to how to get rid of, or how to eliminate, or how to treat, or how to cure this type of bad breath.

But again, there is a need to take many of these claims, in fact all of them with a grain of salt. And again there is a need to go back to getting information on a human being's basic physical anatomy in order to determine whether these claimed cures or treatments or remedies, natural or otherwise, actually make some amount of sense or not. For instance it is claimed that a certain amount of throat clearing may be helpful in order to deal with this problem.

On its face, this particular treatment appears to make sense, such that if the thickness at the back of a person's throat is dealt with by finding a way to expel the unpleasant matter, then there will be less of a breeding ground for those organisms which allow bad breath to be created. And in order to clear the throat, recourse is had again to basic and proper oral hygiene. One goes back to the importance of brushing one's teeth on a regular basis, in order to help clean out the entire mouth, as well as where possibly some of the thickness is accumulating, so that it later becomes easier to spit it out. Gargling and rinsing of the mouth has been mentioned as well, again with the end in mind of allowing the accumulated mass at the back of the throat to be gotten rid of. The use of a tongue scraper has also been mentioned in the sense that it allows for scraping off of some of the unpleasant matter as well, again in order to help dispose of the places where bacteria could potentially breed in larger numbers, leading to bad breath or halitosis.

It has also been mentioned that a more regular drinking of water might be helpful in the sense that it allows as well for the thickness at the back of the throat to be diluted. This particular remedy which is all natural and which can clearly be easily done at home, involves nothing more than drinking adequate amounts of water on a regular basis, so that the water can help wash away the mass which is contributing to bad breath. In addition, even if it doesn't wash the mass away, it dilutes it and moistens it in such a way that the onset of bad breath is also somewhat prevented and the halitosis is alleviated, or at least that is what some websites and blogs claim. In the end, post nasal drip bad breath is something that can be fairly easily researched online, and armed with the knowledge this brings, a person is better equipped to cure it or treat it or eliminate it.
