Why is Potassium health so important? This is because studies have shown that potassium can potentially help in decreasing blood pressure in people who suffer from hypertension. It is also involved in muscle control and nerve functions. If a person’s diet is low in potassium but contains high amounts of sodium can contribute to an increase in that person’s blood pressure. However, it should be noted that taking potassium supplements isn’t recommended for people who have high blood pressure, in general. Instead, they should include various potassium-rich foods into their everyday diet.

But what does potassium do, exactly? Potassium (together with sodium) helps in maintaining the body’s water levels/balance. It was also said that potassium helps in eliminating excess amounts of sodium in the body. Potassium deficiency isn’t at all uncommon and could result from having low calorie diets, severe diarrhea, chronic alcoholism, taking laxatives and diuretics as well as from poor diabetic control.

Potassium health is also important because it is significant when it comes to the body’s maintenance and growth. Potassium deficiency is something you should be wary of as it often occurs in people who are taking medication for certain kinds of heart ailments. These medications basically prevent sodium and water retention. Many doctors would tell patients suffering from this deficiency to increase their intake of potassium rich foods. Foods rich in potassium include cantaloupe, bananas, grapefruit, tomato, oranges, prune juice. Note that many foods that are rich in potassium are also high in calories thus careful watch of the food you eat is necessary.

How does one know if they are low on potassium? You can usually tell if you have regular leg cramps and spasms. Remember, potassium plays a big part in muscle contractions so if you’ve been cramping a lot lately then you should try and include more potassium in your diet. There are also tests that can be done in order to determine if you have low potassium levels. A serum potassium test can be performed in a medical facility and is done through the drawing of blood and subsequently testing it for potassium levels. If you are taking any medications, do inform your doctor about it as there are plenty of various medications that might interfere with the results.

Potassium is one mineral that is often overlooked especially in skincare. Potassium helps promote cell growth. When your body produces more cells, it makes your skin healthier. Healthy skin means beautiful, glowing skin which is an important component in skincare and to sustain women beauty.
