How to get to Potsdam from Berlin

Go to any of the major train stations in central Berlin such as Zoologischer Garten, Hauptbahnhof or Alexanderplatz to get to Potsdam. Take the blue line and it will take you directly there. If you only have a zone AB public transportation ticket you will need to pay a few Euro's more to get to Potsdam train station.

If you wish to to get straight to Sanssouci park from the central train station you can catch a bus. They are pretty regular. If you are unsure which one to take ask at the information desk or any uniformed public transportation staff.

Admission to the Grounds

To get into the grounds it costs a voluntary 2 Euro's for which you will get a map. It usually takes a good four hours to fully appreciate the grounds as they are so extensive. Expect to pay much more to get into the Palaces if they are open.

History of Sanssouci Palaces and grounds

The major attractions of Potsdam are the Palaces and grounds of Sanssouci park built originally for Frederick the Great from 1744. Chiefly the park comprises the Sanssouci Schloss or 'Without care' Palace (began in 1745) and the Neues Palais (Building of this began in 1763) and the Schloss Charlettenhoff (Building of this began in 1826).

The Sanssouci Schloss is famed for its magnificent terraced vineyards which stretch down from the Schloss building to a great fountain. The whole place is teeming with elegant statues, whether on the Palaces themselves or in the grounds.
