Indoor potty training

So it recently occurred to me many people out there still have issues potty training puppies... well who doesn't, have that one stubborn dog, or puppy?

So where to start:

First of all, do you want to paper train or have your dog go potty outside, perhaps both? A good thing to determine this is, is your dog/puppy going to be small all of its life, or just some of it? If all then this will work out better for you. If only some I would recommend having a puppy that learns outdoors is the only place to go.

If the answer is paper train, I repeat DO NOT use newspaper as it will rip easily and it can stain your carpet.

DO however, use potty training pads, they can be found in many pet stores, and even walmart. I would recommend the ones that have the scent on them already, to help attract your puppy to that area.

I also recommend that you use a tray to hold the potty pads in it so that way your puppy does not have a field day tearing it up and leaving you with a paper confetti mess all over the house. The tray will also help keep the scent of urine and other dog messes off the carpet.

Now keep this in mind keep this in a spot you will always leave the training pads, DO NOT confuse your puppy by moving the pads everywhere.  Keep them in the same spot. Also whatever you do DO not keep the potty training pads inside the dog crate, no matter how good of an idea this sounds. DO NOT do it. Why? Well, this will confuse your dog, crates are meant for sleeping, and being a den like area, and if your dog uses it as a bathroom, well it will end up very confused. Make sure that the crate only has enough room for your dog to sit stand and lay down. That way you prevent any messes in the crate.

Also, one thing to keep in mind, if you catch your puppy/dog going elsewhere, DO NOT rub your dogs nose in it, they dont understand what you are doing, or saying, they just happen to know that it is their own scent. In doing this you are teaching your dog to just hide it from you instead. Something you do not want to do.

You CAN however make a loud noise, such as NO, and pick your dog up and bring it to the potty pad, and PRAISE your puppy for finishing there. Dogs/puppies thrive on praise, so this would be a good thing to do.

Then when your puppy/dog is done you can go ahead and clean up the mess if someone else in the house has not already.

(Side Note: A good thing to look for when trying to clean up messes, is something that doesn't have ammonia in it, as it will attract your dog to it, and may cause repeat accidents in the same spot, also look for something to break up enzymes so your dog can not smell it either. Local pet stores should help you with this, I have found out from many people that natures miracle is not as good as it claims to be, but to each their own)

Remember to be consistent with your dog at all times. Even with potty training, so if when you get home you want your puppy to relieve itself, take it to its potty spot, and make sure it does its business, especially if it has been a while. I would NOT recommend leaving the puppy unattended until there is a good amount of success.
