Potty Training Boys
82When Potty Training Boys Try A Rewards System
The idea is simple. When you're potty training boys, try using a simple rewards system.
One way to do it is to purchase a bag (like a halloween basket or something similar), or use a pillowcase, and fill it with small toys and trinkets that your toddler is going to love.
When they have a successful potty, let them choose something from the bag as a reward. Simple, right?
Another way to do it is to get a calendar that your child is going to like - Elmo, the Doodlebops, Handy Manny, etc...and place it someplace where your child can see it easily. Whenver they have a successful potty trip, let them put a sticker on that day. Keep this up until they have a month with no accidents.
Your child is going to get a real kick of starting their sticker collection on their calendar.
Simple ideas. Potty training boys can be easy if you use simple ideas like this.

When potty training boys, what do you do when your toddler wants to stop?
Potty training boys can be a test. How many of you have been cruising along with your toilet training efforts, only to be sideswiped when your little toddler decides he's had enough and wants to use diapers? A lot I'm guessing.
What can you do? Because a big factor in successfully potty training boys is their wanting to do it as much as you want them to. Well, don't panic. It's not unusual for a boy to suddenly want to return to diapers right in the middle of potty training.
Don't fight the kiddo. You'll get absolutely nowhere if your toddler refuses to cooperate. All potty training efforts will come to a standstill most likely anyways.
So work with them. Let them go back to diapers - but agree on a time frame to return to potty training. Encourage them to make the decision with you and they'll more likely be ready to complete potty training when that deadline comes around.
Potty training boys doesn't have to be difficult - with a little info and knowledge you can make it a simpler adventure.

How do you know when to start potty training?
This list is from the American Academy of Pediatrics Website. It gives a list of indicators to help you know when to start potty training.
- Your child stays dry at least two hours at a time during the day or is dry after naps.
- Bowel movements become regular and predictable.
- Facial expressions, posture, or words reveal that your child is about to urinate or have a bowel movement.
- Your child can follow simple instructions.
- Your child can walk to and from the bathroom and help undress.
- Your child seems uncomfortable with soiled diapers and wants to be changed.
- Your child asks to use the toilet or potty chair.
- Your child asks to wear grown-up underwear.
One of the important things to remember is that you want your child to show a real interest in potty training. The more they feel like it is their idea, the easier the whole process is going to be on both of you.
Some simple but important ideas to remember when potty training boys
When you begin potty training boys - it's easy to start off with the best of intentions, but if it's a difficult process, it's only human to become frustrated.
Remember - you're little guy is probably just as frustrated with the whole process as you are.
You should never push or pressure the child if they're not ready. When they're ready - they'll let you know.
It's normal to have accidents after you begin potty training boys. The child might have been dry for days, and then have an accident. Don't ever shame them about it. It's natural and it's important to stay positive. Shaming them or making them feel guilty will only make the process more difficult for them and for you.
And remember - that a child's self image is greatly influenced by you. Your attitude towards potty training is going to have a lasting effect on how they perceive themselves and there body. You want to promote a healthy self-image. Remember that. You are the greatest influence on this little being.
It's a difficult process sometimes - potty training boys. But just remember to encourage your child and they'll get it. Don't let accidents get in the way of staying positive.

I have a 6yr old grandson who is autistic. He refuses to potty train. With 1st grade starting next week I can just see all the problems with the school. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can get him to train. He thinks its a game and sits on the toilet, but does nothing. Later we find he's done it in pullups. Help!!
