Potty Training in One Day
64Potty Training in One Day
Now you can potty train your toddler with magnificent results in just ONE DAY.
Most children are ready to begin the process between 24 to 27 month. This will vary between children.
- Pick a day to dedicate your entire time to your child at home. If there is more people in the house with you or you have more than one child explain them what is the plan and the goal for the day.
- You have to be mentally and physically prepared to run, clean and cheer up through all day, so you do not loose your "cool" at any moment.
- Buy a few packs of underwear for your toddler. Preferable the one of his or her favorite cartoon character. Do not use "Pull ups" diapers.
- Buy a toddler toilet seat to attache it regular toilet seat (cost around $5) instead of the portable potty training sit.
- Have some liquid absorbent cloths if your have carpeted floors or wipes if you have wooden floor to clean up the mess.
- Have a "Maraca" or any other toy that make noise when you shake it or any kitchen pan and metal spoon. Very important to use some noise that your toddler likes and do not scare him or her.Keep it in the bathroom all the time.
- Have a bottle of water to give to your child through all day.
When your toddler wakes up in the morning the first thing you are going to offer is water. Explain him/her what the two of you are going to do together through this day. Do not put any diapers, never even if he/she ask you. Do not put any pants or skirt, just the underwear. Show and put him/her the new underwear and show some excitement from your part. Tell him/her it is because he/she is growing up and diapers are for babies.
You will give him/her food and snack like every day. The only difference is you are going to be offering water more frequently.
Probably he/she is going to urinate on his/her underwear. This is why is very important to dedicate this day to your toddler. If you have hardwood floors he/she can slip and fall down. Usually when they are urinating they feel the urine going down their legs and they stay steady. This will give you time to hold him/her and walk her to the bathroom without falling down. It is very important to do not yell or freak out about seeing the urine on the floor. If you freak out your toddler can receive a wrong message, get scare and every time is time to urinate he/she will hold it in and cry.
As soon he/she is done take her to the bathroom, remove his/her underwear. If is a girl, sit her in the toilet sit you bought or if is a boy show him how to stand in front of the toilet and how to hold his parts while doing his thing. Probably he/she won't urinate because already did it on the floor. But you will celebrate anyway with the "Maraca" or the toy you chose to make the noise and make a big deal of it. Tell the other people in the house, if any, to help you celebrate and cheer him/her up.
Remember to explain everything while is happening. Some people prefer to buy the portable toilet seat and have it around the house. But the idea is to make it fun for your child. You can pretend you are running to the bathroom and if he/she like it will remember that is more fun if you run to the bathroom.
Change his/her underwear. Get very excited about it again. Explain him/her to go to the bathroom next time. Let him/her to see you cleaning the floor and again explain.
Usually children go to the bathroom every two hours. If you see is almost two hours after he/she urinated offer more water and take him/her to the bathroom and ask him/her to do it like before. Remember to celebrate every-time that goes to the bathroom.
Some time after you just change the urinated underwear they make potty on their clean underwear. Please do not show to your child if you get upset or impatience. Just take him/her to the bathroom again.
After 5-6 times your toddler will not have to use diapers again.
(Optional) You can be an example and take him/her with you every time you need to go.
Use "Pull ups" diapers only when going to sleep at night. After a month change the "Pull ups" for underwears. Probably will wet the bed a few times before notice it. Before going to bed put a night light on his/her bedroom. Put another one in the bathroom and if you have a long hallway between both, put another one on the hallway. Explain him/her that the night lights are to make him/her easier to find the way to the bathroom. Some children prefer to go to mom bedroom and ask their mom to help them to find the bathroom. This could happens a few night before he/she get use to it.
Note: Usually boys take longer to get use to it. I have seen girl to be going to the bathroom after 3 times urinating them. Boys 6 to 8.
Good Luck!
