Powermat Wireless Charger
81
Considering how often we use our wireless devices, it seems ironic that we still require wired chargers in order to power them. There is a current fad among electronics to create mats that make it easy to charge all our mobile devices in one convenient place such as The Sharper Image Charging Valet.
There is also a trend toward “wireless power”, but this is not about power that can be transmitted over distance. Usually, this wireless power means laying down a mobile device on a tray and letting the power flow in between the tray and device as they touch each other. This is what the Powermat is made for.
The sleek ebony Powermat plugs right into a wall with the included AC cord, and ready to work. Just to let you know, we are still a long way from just setting any mobile device on any charging mat and wirelessly charging it that way.
Yes, the Powermat requires the user to use the included Powercube. This is a little white square that can connect with a mobile device with one of the eight included tips, and made to be laid on the Powermat. These tips included are an Apple, micro USB, Sony, Samsung, LG, and two DS Lites. It also comes with a tiny box with a lid that rotates off to store all the tips.
You have another option, if you do not wish to use the Powercube, is to purchase the back panels required for your mobile devices. They have them available for all sorts of gadgets including the DSi, BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Pearl, and iPod Touch, just to name a few. These are designed to fit on the back of the aforementioned mobile devices and lock magnetically for a charge, and there is even a receiver for an iPod and iPhone that is made to lock in place and then dock with your favorite Apple devices.
I haven’t told you the coolest part about the Powermat. You see, every time you put a device on the Powermat, it magnetically locks in place. There is room for about three mobiles on there, and when they are put on, a light comes on and there is even a very cool mechanical whirring sound.
You should be able to get the Powermat at many stores everywhere for about $99.99. Most of the receiver cases or back panels will cost about $29.99, which is the same price for the Powercubes. The aforementioned wireless receiver dock for the iPod and iPhone costs about $39.99.
