Practical Action to Stop Niger Delta Agitation

 By; Tamunobarabi Gogo Ibulubo

As the first oil and Gas conference and exhibition ends its two day convergence of stakeholders in the oil industry at Port Harcourt, participants have decried the ‘'too many talks and less action' to develop the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

While appreciating the strength of the Port Harcourt chambers of commerce, industry, mines and agriculture, in organising the event, the participants said the oil and Gas business will continue to loss stem if the people are not provided adequate attention and the area properly developed.

They said that in the fifty years of oil exploration business in Nigeria, it was sad to note that the area has been marginalized, neglected and the people lack basic amenities that would make life comfortable for them.

People like Chief Sara Igbe, Chief John Ogolo and Ijeoma Ijeh said political will and a trusted person who is so commissioned can ‘SAVE' the situation and reduce or stop the agitation that has threatened business and insecurity in the area. They sued that political lip service to developing the area should stop.

The Niger Delta Oil and Gas conference and exhibition is the first of its kind to hold in the country. It was declared opened by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua ON THE 10TH July,2008.

The Niger Delta is the oil rich area of Nigeria that contributes about 90% to the national economy. What happens in the region: and if it affects oil production activites upsets the economy and affects world price of oil per barrel.
