Prayer Box

"What is a Prayer Box?" you ask...

In different religions and cultures, there are different names... Tibetan Buddhists call it a "Gau" (Ghau or Gao), Latin Americans call it a "Package Amulet", African-Americans say "Conjure Bag" or "Mojo Hands", South Americans have "Charm Vials" and Americans sometimes refer to them as "Wish Boxes". While there has been debate where the prayer box first originated, they are treasured by many faiths, and even by nonreligious individuals. Originally worn as a religious ritual object, prayer boxes are now designed as jewelry and worn for sentimental, not necessarily religious, reasons.

Prayer Boxes are available in many different sizes and shapes and can be ornate or simple in design. No matter how they look, they are all designed to have a small compartment within, accessed by opening the Prayer Box. There are screw-tops, and hinged flip-tops with latch closures and also "clam-shell" varieties that open much like a locket. They are most often designed like a pendant - for wear on a necklace or bracelet.

Traditionally, Prayer Boxes have been used to keep a tiny mementoe, note, or sentimental treasure. A lock of hair, baby's first tooth, your love's initials, sand or dirt from a special place, whatever is dear to you can be placed inside. It's also believed that a prayer or wish that is whispered into one will come true!

The significance of the modern Prayer Box differs for every wearer - as will its contents. We are only limited by our imagination.
