Taken Movie Review

For those of us who saw Rob Roy, it’s easy to think of Liam Neeson as a badass. But for some, the idea of Liam Neeson as a badass is like imagining that Richard Simmons is a raging womanizer. Believe it or not Taken is the film that elevates Neeson from a quirky but likable dude into the rarified air that has been breathed by actors like Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson. After having seen Taken, there can be no denying the fact. Of course, Neeson is only a PG-13 badass and not a full-fledged rated-R badass, so he can never approach the level of awesomeness of the characters in First Blood or Commando.

The movie (for those who have yet to see the commercials) tells the story of some ancient duder (Liam Neeson) who is a former spy and all-around ass kicker. The dude’s daughter is abducted by a bunch of foreign sex-slavers, which causes him to contract a case of the rage and start killing anyone who had anything to do with his offspring’s disappearance. Neeson strolls into sex shacks for a good 75 minutes destroying anyone who is unlucky enough to be working there… the effect is not unsatisfying..

Taken is the second flick directed by French moviemaker Pierre Morel. You may or may not remember Morel from his previous flick District B13. In Taken, Morel crafts a tight action flick filled with shocking moments and brutality. Morel’s development of character and his focus on telling the tell while still creating solid action is outstanding and his love of non-spastic camera movements (which every hack-fuck action director is so in love with) is refreshing as Neeson’s character pummels, strangles, and fills full of lead every bad dude that comes into view. Taken has a raw look, but a lot of the scenes aren’t as grimy as they should be. What do you expect when you’re trying to maintain a PG-13 rating? Taken could have easily been covered in boobs and blood, and if they had gone that route the film would most likely be a 9 or a 10. Even though the film’s rating keeps it from being as good as it could have been, it is quite a feat to be this brutal without the benefit of sweet blood splatters.

Taken would not work if it weren’t for Liam Neeson. In Taken, Neeson captures shades of Eastwood and Bronson. While he isn’t as good as those tough guys, his performance is worthy of being mentioned in the same breath. Neeson appears as a genuine badass throughout the whole film and he recites his lines with a single-mindedness that borders on the psychotic… so much so that you will feel your skin crawl. No one else in the film is even remotely interesting, as most everyone else in Taken is simply there to have their face smashed by Neeson.

Taken could be a true classic, but the movie’s rating prevents it from being a classic. If you’re going to make a movie about the sex-trade, you should probably just up the ante and make a rated-R flick. As great as Taken is for one time viewing, it lacks true staying power.

End Analysis: Give Taken a watch to check out Liam Neeson being a badass. It’s worth it.
