The Delphic Oracle

It was a long haul up the hillside in the heat of the sun, but the travellers believed the journey would be worth the effort. They'd heard such great things about the Priestess, and they just knew that their questions would be answered and they would be able to draw up their plans with confidence once they'd heard the lady's thoughts. Carefully nursing the precious gifts that they had brought with them as offerings to the mighty God, Apollo, the men moved forward towards the great stone pillars above them on the slope.

Many such travellers found their way to this remote spot in Greece. The Oracle at Delphi was well-renowned throughout the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Visitors came from as far as Egypt to seek guidance there.

The priestess was known as the ’Pythia’, and she was selected by the Priesthood from amongst the peasants who lived in the countryside near the Temple. She was a woman of good character and mature years, and her words helped shape political decisions, and also determined matters of the heart. When the trance came upon her, she would speak in riddles that only the priests could decipher. Perched on a tripod seat over an opening in the Earth, the prophetess uttered her cryptic predictions to an attentive audience who were laden with offerings for the Oracle.

Some said that gases from the bowels of the Earth induced her visions, and others claimed that the Gods whispered their secrets to her until such time as she became too feeble and aged to impart her prophesies any longer, and a successor would be sought to receive the wisdom of the Sanctuary of Apollo.

From before recorded history right through until the earthquake of 83B.C. and then intermittently until 395A.D, the Ancient Greeks sought out the wisdom of the Oracle at Delphi. And who can blame them? The world is so full of the unknown. It’s no surprise that we constantly seek to make sense of it. From casting runes to reading the entrails of animals sacrificed to the Gods, from gazing at the stars, to crystal balls, palmistry, the I Ching, and the Tarot, mystics and psychics have always had a place at the table.

After all, wouldn’t you just love to have the gift of clairvoyance? To be able to receive a vision of the future so clear that you can pick out every tiny detail?

The Prophesies of Nostradamus

Of all the published predictions and prophesies written over the years, perhaps the best-known are those of Nostradamus, who has been credited with predicting numerous events in world history, from the Great Fire of London, right through to the destruction of the World Trade Centre, as well as foreshadowing the rise of both Napoleon and Hitler.

Born in France, in 1503, Michel de Nostradame was a French apothecary with a deep and abiding interest in foretelling future events. In 1555 he published a book known as 'Les Propheties', copies of which are still in existence. The prophesies take the form of quatrains, and their meanings are obscure and difficult to determine with any accuracy. Many people assume that these prophesies are completely Nostradamus's own work, the result of long hours spent in mystic contemplation, but scholars in later times identified sources as diverse as the Bible, Astrology, and the works of Savonarola and others, as published in the Mirabilis Liber of 1522, Despite all this, Nostradamus has become a towering figure in the traditions and myth of divination. Further evidence of our need to grapple with the unknown and the unknowable.

The Psychic Twins

Some years ago I was watching a discussion about psychics on a UK chat show, and American twins,Terry and Linda Jamison, known internationally as "The Psychic Twins," were featured. The programme stuck in my mind because of a reference to the twin's prediction of the 9/11 bombing. In my experience, most psychic prediction is either personal, trivial, or both. You know the kind of thing, "I see a tall, dark man entering your life. Does the letter 'P' mean anything? And yes, you will be making a long journey any day soon....." But this prophesy was different. This was a tangible, real life world event, and it excited my curiousity.

Researching for this hub, I learned that the Psychic Twins have been professional psychics for twenty years. Aside from making surprisingly accurate world predictions, the pair have reunited families, assisted criminal investigations, and located missing persons, all through their unusual gift of automatic writing.

20 million listeners heard the Psychic Twins predict the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre Towers and on Washington, D.C. during an interview on the Art Bell Radio Show in November 1999. Other world predictions about natural disasters, medical breakthroughs, and economic events have appeared frequently in their channeled writing.

The ladies have their own web-site, and provide private readings. Are they the real mcCoy, or just incredibly lucky? You must decide that for yourself.

Hubbers Predictions

Some of our fellow hubbers have also dipped their toes in the murky waters of prediction and divination, and you might want to check out some of their hubs a little later. Perhaps after you've joined in my hubber's 2009 prediction quiz further down the page would be a good time!

Here are just some of the many and varied prediction hubs currently published. Some are serious and analytical in intent, and some are a little more tongue in cheek!

Hubbers get to predict events for 2009

There are very many talented and inspired hubbers using HubPages, and it occurred to me that some of you reading this hub might have your own sixth sense about forth-coming world events. If you have any major premonitions please share them. We need to know! Failing that, here are some questions about 2009. Answer honestly, using your intuition, and at the end of the year, visit this hub again, and see how close we got!

Wow Amanda I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Great research and great writing always make up for a great read!

Btw, was the survey a paid survey? No? Darn! LOL Anyways, my answers were more like wishful thinking and hoping than predictions! :D

Great read, Amanda! I don't know that I would love to have the gift of clairvoyance, ALL THE TIME, but it would probably help SOMETIMES! Checky me, I know! I never before heard of the Psychic Twins, what a funky pair! I am such a non believer, but some things one just can't argue against. Still.... oh well, let's let it be! Laugh!

A thought struck while reading, silly one (typical of me!): You're bound to get hits from people searching for the Oracle Database! Told ya, silly thought!

Hi Cris,

I think a good dose of healthy optimism never goes amiss. Perhaps if everyone focussed on positive outcomes, then we might actually get some! Thanks for stopping by, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I suspect the truth is that our combined guesses will turn out to be just as accurate as the efforts of all the various astrologers and psychics, but only time will tell!

Hi Elena

Is there really an oracle database? Nothing would surprise me as there is any amount of psychic info on the internet. Personally I do have some belief in psychic phenomena, but I'm sensible enough to know that there are an awful lot of wannabes and charlatans out there. I could have written a whole series of hubs on internet Psychics (I still might! LOL), but I wanted to keep this short enough to maintain people's attention. The Psychic Twins are very well-known in the USA, and they have some fairly impressive predictions under their belt, but sadly most other publicity seeking psychics are short on real success stories.

Hi C.C. and JustmeSuzanne,

Thanks for stopping by, and yes, C.C. you don't see too many psychics winning the lotto. At least they're not owning up to it anyway! LOL!

Hey Amanda!  Oracle is a huge corporation (one of the really biggie ones that get so bad mouthed round here, laugh!), as big as Microsoft, just sells for companies as opposed to individuals.  I'll have you know, 9 of the 10 biggest orgs in terms of storing data in the world run on the Oracle Database, eg Amazon, Library of Congress, CIA....

Now, that's totally unrelated to your hub, but not really, since Oracle Corp got it's name as a nick of The Oracle (the one in your article!!) -- gather data to be able to prepare for (if not predict) the future.  There you go.  Now you're wondering if you really needed to know all that!!  Laugh!!

Hi Elena,

Thanks for enlightening me. Just goes to show that there are some fairly major gaps in my knowledge of the world in general, and computers in particular! No surprise there (at least, not to me!)

Oracle is a good name for a database. Makes a lot of sense.

C. C. Riter  says:

They do gather certain keywords and do predict what will happen. It all strted as a way to watch the markets and sure enough they got wind of certain actions that led up to events such as 911, not sure if Oracle had anything to do with it, but they are watching evrything that is said online, everything and evry keystroke.

Great hub, really got me thinking and I think it will be interesting to see how things really pan out by the end of the year. Hope I remember to come back and have a look, I enjoyed answering those questions.

Hi C.C.

I guess somebody really should be monitoring the Internet even if it does smack of Big Brother. I don't know what Oracle must make of the rubbish I churn out, but hopefully I never say anything too contraversial (or not so far anyway!)

Hi Brian,

We're living in interesting times, and I think there are any number of surprises in store for us this year, some nice and some not so nice. I could have gone much further with the questions, but I didn't want to get too mired in gloom and doom! I think it will be interesting to see how things have panned out at the end of the year and how accurate our combined predictions have been.

Hi CWB

You never fail to come up with a new angle, or a new piece of information! I've just looked at the two links, and I was fascinated. The first thing that came to me was 'Midwich Cuckoos' and the second thing was 'Monsters Inc!' For years I have regarded humanity as a herd species. I believe that we turn and pivot on the wind in a similar way to flocks of geese. How else do you explain phenomena such as fashion, politics and religion? And I do believe that telepathy happens all the time, and I've also seen telekenesis occur, right in front of me. I believe there is a form of collective conciousness, and one day the scientists will come up with a great deal more than graphic variations on a Boolean number generator. This discovery in itself is very significant, but there is much more to be learned. Perhaps we're actually no more than individual cogs in a highly evolved machine.

It was really a great list and most of the times I have gone with the majority sentiment. Recently I saw a documentary which was refuting nostradamus predictions saying it was in a cryptic sentences which can be twisted as per the readers perceptions after the incidents. You did a fantastic job and thumbs up for the polls. I hope you do a follow up at the year end to check up how many majority predictions came right :D

Hi CW

Good to see you here. We haven't spoken for a while, but I have been wondering how things are going for you now. I hope your new life is working out well, and a big cyber hug to you!

Yes, Nostradamus is a bit too cryptic for my liking. I think that any one of us could do as well if we apply some logic and some home-grown intuition. I'm hoping that this hub attracts enough traffic to get a clear picture of hubbers opinions, but it's been a little slow so far. It certainly will be fun in a year's time to see how accurate we have all been!

Amanda- Yes life has been far too busy and today we have to go out for some program in another few hours. I am making one sweet item and we have to assemble for potluck(it is a festival day for us). I hope one of these days you write a hub about past life regression therapy since I am getting some dreams which I am not sure of and would like to know if it has anything to do with similar things.

Life does change a lot after marriage and I am still trying to adjust to so many things. The whole friends circle, routine and other things are different now.  Anyway it is always nice talking to you and I have to check up on the milk. Bye take care and hope to talk to you soon.

Great hub, really took my mind of those poltergeists before going to bed, loved all the polls, will be interesting to see how we perform, wasn't suprised to find that 0% expected: 'A conglomerate of wealthy individuals will form a consortium to end world hunger', lol damn those greedy fat cats.

I'd be interested to hear the actual words of the psychic twins 9/11 prediction, is it hazy or specific?  Will check to see if it's on Youtube.

I have to admit the one about world hunger was written with my tongue firmly in my cheek! Interestingly, (for me at least!) I wrote the hub before the Italian earthquake in Aquila, and when I voted, I actually ticked the box for a European earthquake, and still have a feeling there may be another, so perhaps all this investigating psychic activity is giving me the vibe! LOL!

The pschic twins were fairly specific, apparently. Check this link if you haven't already tripped over it:

I didn't get this feed. I wonder why. Oh well, it was awesome as usual! I was researching the Green Revolution today and discovered that the original one in 1945 was intended to alleviate world hunger with agricultural technology and it made a huge impact. But it also dumped fertilizer and pesticides into the environment. Go figure.

Amanda Severn profile image

Amanda Severn  says:

It seems that the Law of Unintended Consequences is always beavering away in the background. You can't jump into a pool without making ripples! Whatever we do to improve the environment will be at a cost to someone, somewhere. I worry that the big drive to eat locally sourced food will hit some of the African countries who rely on their exports. Yes, we need to reduce food miles, but the cost of that might be the loss of livelihhood for many of those in third world countries.

Hi Amanda

I really enjoyed your story about the 2 cow farmers. I am seking peace after a government pest operation killed 2 out my 3 pet incalf pet house cows. Can you make a prediction for the future if they will ever stop using 1080 poison in New Zealand??

Amanda Severn profile image

Amanda Severn  says:

Hi Bronwyn, I have family in New Zealand, and I know what a beautiful place it is. I've not heard about 1080 poison but I'm really sorry to hear about your cows, and I hope the government have some kind of compensation on offer, even though I appreciate that's not the same as the lives of animals you are fond of. I don't have any particular inspiration either way about this pesticide, but it is my hope that the world will gradually move away from the over-use of killer poisons on crops.
