Recycled Juice Can Lid Easter Decoration

I have a three year old at home and also work as an activities programmer for my local library where I must think of at least one creative craft to do with Preschoolers (ages 2-5) on Monday and Afterschoolers (Ages 5-11) on Thursday.

This past Monday, I had an Easter program with the preschoolers. We made decorations out of juice can lids which turned out to be a really great craft. It is really easy for little hands, gender-neutral, not too messy because you can use tape instead of glue, great because it uses some recycled materials, and easy to adapt into a Christmas decoration or a craft for older kids by swapping some materials (Check out the "Project Modifications" list at the end of the craft). Just a note, I entered this craft into a contest on Kaboose.com, so if you see it posted there, just know that I posted it, they didn't copy me and I didn't copy them!

Materials (to make 10 decorations):

- Ten juice can lids (saved from frozen, concentrated juice), washed, dried, no sharp edges

- 20 Pre-cut wooden Easter cutouts (You can usually find these at a Dollar store or craft store in sheets, then you just pop them out. If you cannot locate any wooden Easter cut outs, please see the "Project Modifications" list at the bottom of the craft)

- Markers and or Crayons

- Clear Scotch tape

- Double-sided tape or double-sided mounting squares

- 10 pieces of pastel green, yellow or orange coloured curling ribbon (cut into 20 inch lengths)

- 10 pieces of pastel pink or blue coloured curling ribbon (cut into 20 inch lengths)

- Scissors

Steps:

1. Take one of your precut ribbons, and fold in half. Press the ribbon against the back of a juice can lid and tape with Scotch tape so that the ribbon makes about a two inch loop at the top and there is about 6 inches hanging down at the bottom.

2. Repeat the ribbon step with the other colour of ribbon. Set juice can lid aside.

3. Give your child two of the wooden Easter shapes to colour with crayons or markers.

4. When the child has completed colouring the shapes, tape a shape onto each side of the lid with double-sided tape or a mounting square.

5. Loosely curl the hanging ribbons at the bottom with the scissors.

6. Repeat for each decoration.

7. You can use this decoration for an Easter tree, a gift or to hang in the window.

Project Modifications:

1. If you can't find pre-cut wooden shapes, you can use precut foam shapes, or trace Easter-shaped cookie cutters onto cardboard and cut out cardboard shapes (Obviously this is a little more time consuming, but if you are doing this craft with older kids, you can include this step for them to do.)

2. If you don't mind glue and sparkles, let your little crafter decorate the finished decoration with glue and sparkles. Allow to dry. Squeezable glitter glue is good for this step, easier to clean up!

3. For older crafters, replace the markers with paint and you can give them glue instead of tape. Include some other decorations for them, such as flat-backed craft jewels, sequins, sparkles, and buttons.

4. Use just bunny shapes and add googly eyes and a mini pom-pom tail.

5. You can easily adapt this craft to other hoildays. It makes a great Christmas tree decoration, just swap pastel ribbon colours to green and red ribbons, and swap the Easter shapes to Christmas shapes or stars.
