President Obama - Give Back the Prize

Obama Speaks at the U.N.

President Barack Hussein Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Go figure. It is not hard to understand this one. But for those of you that don’t, I’ll let Fidel Castro spell it out for you.

“Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro also weighed in. He called the Nobel award a "positive step," although he said it was more a repudiation of former President George W. Bush than a recognition of anything concrete Obama has done.” (AP Wire 10/10/2009 Italics mine) Castro is no fan of the U.S., yet even he felt compelled to point out the contradiction this award represents.

The awarding of the Peace Prize to Obama is a slap in the face to former recipients of this award as well as a cheapening of its meaning. Former recipients include:

· The International Red Cross – Twice

· Amnesty International

· Bishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu

· Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin

· Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk

· Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Perez

· Mother Teresa

If you don’t know what these individuals and organizations did to receive this award – you should. If you don’t know what Obama has done to receive this award – well neither do I.

A man that has been President less time than he was a Senator, and less time a Senator than it takes to get a law degree should have been embarrassed enough to turn down the prize. There were 204 other candidates for this prize. Why was it given to Obama?

This is a clear signal from the international community that they want Obama and his administration to continue on the current path they are on. This is a carrot on a stick, in other words. On the same day that Obama won the prize, he also refused to meet with the visiting Dalai Lama. This is the first time a sitting President has not met with the Dalai Lama when he has visited. The reasoning behind this? Obama did not want to upset his visit with the Chinese Premier next month. Appeasement in other words. That is what most of the united nations want from us. And Obama appears ready to give it. God forbid we upset Wen Jiabao who considers Tibet a part of China. Never mind that the Congress of the United States passed a resolution in 1991 under the Foreign Authorization Act that Tibet was an “Occupied Nation” and its true leaders are the Dalai Lama and it’s government in exile.

Here is the reasoning of the Nobel Committee for giving such a formerly prestigious award to a man that has accomplished nothing of note in the world arena:

“The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee — four of whom spoke to The Associated Press, said awarding Obama the peace prize could be seen as an early vote of confidence intended to build global support for the policies of his young administration.

They lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation, and praised his pledges to reduce the world stock of nuclear arms, ease U.S. conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen its role in combating climate change.” (AP 10/09/2009 Italics mine)

The italicized statement in the former paragraph makes my point. The italicized part of the statement in the second paragraph blows my mind. This is a man on the cusp of sending 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan. I agree with this troop increase. General Stanley A. McChrystal is the man in charge over there and if he says he needs more troops then by God we need to give him more troops. But now, how does the Nobel Committee reconcile this much talked about possibility with their giving of the award to Obama? I believe we need to insure that the Taliban never gains a foothold in that nation, or any other, again. Their increased activity in Pakistan should show any of us they are far from a neutralized threat. But If the President is serious about ending this threat – how does he accept this award? We are a nation on a war footing with terrorism. We must be dogged in our pursuit of Al Qaeda wherever that may lead us.

Giving this award to Obama is a contradiction in itself. And President Obama is sending extremely confusing signals to both the American people and the rest of the world by accepting it. Show the American people and her troops in harm’s way President Obama, that you are serious about winning this war in Afghanistan. Show the American people that America is your number one priority – not globalization. I, for one, am damn sick of heeding the words of ungrateful nations that so obviously dislike us, but are first in line for the handouts when they need them. Show the rest of the world you love America first – give them back their bribe.

This is a real test for Obama, if he gives it back, or if he will accept something he know's he does not deserve. I thought i heard the audience gasps when the announcement was made. Or was it just my hearing?

Seems a shame such an award got dirtied up with such a mean spirit towards us when there are so many deserving it that could leverage its prestige to good end. This award will mean less from now on having been so sullied.

He was nominated no later than 11 days after he took office. Those must have been an extremely busy 11 days.

In the words of Mark Steyn: "Obama is the first president who thinks the job is too small for him."

Good Hub. The problem is with the committee. They have now made the Nobel Peace Prize about as honorable & valuable as a trinket from a box of Cracker Jacks.

From what I understand, the award was given for his efforts while in office. Was there something I missed in those 11 days? nicomp, if Mark Steyn words truly reflect President Obama's view of the job, then he has admitted to putting our country in jeopardy for not understanding his total job description and responsibility. The job is to large for any one man! How disturbing!

Islandvoice - I'm afraid he's already made it clear he will not be giving it back. And yes, you did hear gasps but that might have been hard to hear over our own! lol

G-Ma - Exhale Dear! Exhale!

Hmrjmr - well said, i couldn't agree more.

Nicomp - 11 days smacks of premeditation in my book.

Ken - Perhaps you could submit that suggestion to the committee. Then we could all be good world citizens with our medals around our necks.

Timely - great point. Tougher job for him now without ACORN to help.

Thank all of you for your comments.

@John Z: BHO seems to want to be everywhere at once, while cultivating class warfare along the way. If he can handle it all, good on him. Doesn't seem to be so at this point.

The Nobel Peace Prize now devalues at the same rate as the US Dollar. What is the common denominator here? Excellent editorial piece, and bang on, as usual.

Great hub Johnz. Obama won the "we hate George Bush" Award and nothing more. Giving him the award makes future awards meaningless. Will he give it back. Never in hell.

He can accept the award as an "advance", but he has, simply HAS to donate it somewhere for noble purposes. It's big money, gosh...

If he doesn't, he is more rotten than I consider him to be rotten...

Vladimir - Thank you for stopping by!

Nicomp - he's in over his head.

Advisor - as of this morning I have my first yes out of 13 votes.

Linda - thanks for the comment!

Breakfast - Good to see you! I couldn't agree more on both counts!

Reuvera - if he accepts the award before he deserves it then by those rights I should get a Pulitzer in Journalism and hope to earn it before I die! As I understand he is donating the money to charity in December. Thanks for the comment!

This event shocked me. I thought I had seen everything. When Carter and Gore won it I knew something was wrong with the process. I suppose we can assume the Norwegians are no friends of the U.S. Which is curious, since we've never had any ill dealings with them of which I am aware. Anyway, great Hub. Thanks.

James - A very blatant act of courtship on the part of globalism. The European mindset to stamp out nationalism arises from the two world wars started in their own backyard - yet they expect the rest of the world to ascribe to their solution set. When we don't (we have no such issues) then we are considered part of the problem. So, if we are to participate on the world stage, then we must react as though this is something of paramount importance to us when in reality it matters very little. Thanks for stopping by.

Jiberish - It takes class to drink Scotch. I would however like to know what they were smoking. Thanks for the comment!

The Nobel peace prize was morphed into a popularity symbol when they gave it to the likes of Kofee Annan, Yasser Arafat and Al Gore. Obama agrees that he didn't deserve it for anything he has accomplished. Therefore, he is donating the prize money to charity - a shadowy organization known as "The Committee of Five Norwegian Drunks."

Obama pretended that he didn't know that he was in the running to get the prize when in fact his name was included only a few weeks after he won the election. No he should keep it because he earned it by trying to turn America into a socialist country...the jokes on him!

owurakwasip  says:

Why not? He did not ask for it (The Nobel Peace Prize).

You mentioned Fidel Castro at the start of your hub. He is so old; can he think straight? I wonder.

I am not actually an Obama fan; but I perceive him to have done nothing wrong, so far, politically or otherwise.

Place Kick - You hit the nail on the head! Thanks for the comment.

owurakwasip - Not to put too fine a point on it but one does not win the Nobel Peace prize for having done nothing wrong.
