Presidential Retreats from JFK to Barack Obama

History of Camp David, from VOA
Every President has had his own home to retreat to, but Camp David is for working holidays, when you're hosting important foreign dignitaries or close friends, or just want to get away from the White House, but don't have the luxury of going all the way to a ranch near Santa Barbara or a beachfront vacation home in Hawaii.
The 125 acre Camp David is literally a fortress, known formally as the Naval Support Facility Thurmont, and is the President’s country residence, and is located 60 miles north of Washington DC in Catoctin Mountain Park in Frederick County, Maryland. Obviously, the security is unparalleled, and the President can the nation same as if he were at the White House.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Great Britain was the first to be invited to a meeting at Camp David, in May of 1943. Most British Prime Ministers, including Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, had excellent relationships with the American Presidents during their terms and were usually put up at Camp David when they visited.
Former President George W. Bush (according to author Kitty Kelley) is the only one who has had the privilige of snorting coke at Camp David, when his father George H.W. Bush was President.
President Obama Vacation in Hawaii
Here's a full list of the Presidential retreats, in addition to Camp David, of every President from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush and, of course, the new blackberry toting environmentally conscious nerd on the block - Barry Obama.
President Barack H. Obama - Now this is one guy who really knows how to maximize the effectiveness of his retreats. He's got three main options - Camp David, his now-former home in Chicago's Kenwood-Hyde Park area, or vacations in Hawaii, where he grew up.
Now the reason I say that he knows how to maximize the benefits of a relaxing retreat is that unlike previous Presidents who went to the same retreat throughout the year, President Obama has the luxury of spending summer vacations bicycling on the shores of Lake Michigan, and winter holidays bodysurfing on the warm sandy beaches of Oahu, showing off his abs and triceps, and drinking in the Aloha Spirit.
George W. Bush - Former President Bush spent a lot of his Presidency at the Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, TX (77 trips in 8 years). Not to belittle the wonderful life in Crawford, but for the journalists on the White House beat, it was agony.
There's no nightlife, and only one restaurant and gas station put together. The journalists had to stay at hotels in Waco, 30 minutes from Crawford, since there isn't a single hotel in Crawford.
And if that doesn't tell you how un-welcome visitors are in Crawford, then the news that even the Bushes have abandoned the place definitely will. George and Laura Bush have purchased a home in Dallas, and will be spending most of their time in Dallas.Â
Obama & Bill Clinton eating sandwiches in Clinton's Harlem Office
William J. Clinton - Bubba loves nothing better than mixing it up in Harlem, and he even has an office in Harlem. If he didn't have a place of his own in the City, the Clinton Foundation would end up stuck with a gigantic tab at various New York hotels, since Bill Clinton spends a major part of every year in the Big Apple.
Fortunately, that's not necessary, since he and Hillary own a Dutch-Colonial mansion in Chappaqua, NY. Hillary, on the other hand, spent most of her time in Washington DC as a Senator, and will continue to do so in her new job as Obama's Secretary of State. So the Clintons have another home in Washington DC, so Bill Clinton also has the choice of hopping over from NYC to DC, if he wants to.
BIll Clinton is one of the few Presidents who didn't go back to where he came from, post-Presidency. He's from Little Rock, Arkansas, and his Presidential Library is also located there, so you could say that its a third option for a Bill Clinton retreat.
George H.W. Bush - Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, Maine has been in the Bush family since 1902, when George W Bush's great-grandfather, George Herbert Walker bought it. It's a historic place now, one of the prime tourist attractions in Maine, and as you can see in the picture, it's a great place for a retreat.
Nowadays they call it The Kennebunkport estate, or the Bush Compound. Two of Amercia's Presidents grew up in this compound, and spent a lot of summers here. In fact, they still do.
Throw in the foreign heads of state who the Bushes have hosted here, and factor in the possible Presidential candidacy of Jeb Bush in future, and you can safely say that Walker's Point has scored more time with future Presidents, sitting Presidents and former Presidents than any other Presidential retreat.
Ronald W. Reagan - Reagan's retreat was a 688 acre ranch outside Santa Barbara, CA. He built Rancho del Cielo with his own hands, and spent all or part o 335 days out of 8 years of his Presidency at this ranch. The place is now owned by the Young America Foundation. The Reagan Ranch is closed to the public, but you can get a tour if you make a donation to them, or if you're part of a student group or a prominent conservative group.
Jimmy Carter - Only 79 days out of Carter's four years as President were spent on vacations in Georgia, probably because he was a plain guy who went back to Plains, GA when he wanted to get away from the White House.
Gerald R. Ford - Gerald Ford's Presidential Library is in Grand Rapids, MI, and he liked to spend working vacations on Mackinac Island in Michigan, where the famed Grand Hotel is located. But the place he called his Western White House was in Vail, Colorado, and he even bought a house in Beaver Creek.
Richard M. Nixon - Nixon's retreat, in more ways than one, was La Casa Pacifica, a mansion located on the beaches of San Clemente, CA, overlooking the Pacific. After the Watergate scandal, when he left the White House in disgrace, Nixon found solace and comfort in San Clemente, where he wrote his memoirs, and the locals were fully supportive and sympathetic to him and his wife Pat Nixon. It's a private residence now.
Lyndon B. Johnson - LBJ's retreat was a ranch in Stonewall, near Austin, TX. It's become part of the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site, open to the public and managed by the National Park Service.
John F. Kennedy - Much like the Bush Compound in Maine, the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport, Massachusetts consists of 6 acres of waterfront property along Nantucket Sound - the place where JFK and Bobby and the entire Kennedy clan resided. Democrats who can't get Camelot out of their hearts and minds still consider it pilgrimge worthy. And Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), JFK and Bobby's younger brother, still lives there.
