Training the Disadvantage

Help for the Disadvanted Persons

It is difficult to find a job if you have a felon record. When you return to society, try looking for some kind of training programs. If you complete the training program, they may have resources to help locate a job for you. A lot of colleges have trained felons that have successfully graduated and in good positions.. It is hard and can be very depressing and some communities are not forgiving. Most drug related problems can be overcome. Also there are program to expunge your background off of your record. Try to locate a law college or public defender to help you. Another resource is a legal service for consumers. The real problem is that the penal system does not, in most states train the inmates. If they are going to be there for 1 - 5 years there should be a way for them to go to school and perhaps obtain a college degree. They are going to be getting out and should be prepared to be gainfully employed. Or, get a GED certificate for a job.

If we as society do not try and help to rehabilitate the inmates from prison, they will return and continue to do crime. The reason is simple, there are no avenues for them to be successful and they give up trying. We need social workers that are equipped to handle the problems, and steer them in the right direction. They need therapy and religious counselling in order to succeed. There are many professionals, and if you really want to succeed in your personal life, than you need to give back to society.

We as Christians go to church, and read our Bibles faithfully every Sunday, and come home and forget what we have learned, or don't apply what we have learned. We are not helping society. That is the reason that we have missionaries, to help people. We can't all contribute to the cause, because we have other demands on our lives,. But ,we can ask the church to contribute in combining their missions. They can minister to the local inmates in the jails. It takes a special kind of personality to work in this field. The demand for this type of work is growing.

A job for felons is sometimes helping other inmates as they leave the institutions or jails. When you help someone else, you may be able to forget your own problems. Inmates are human being, and we should remember that they did serve their time, and deserve a chance to succeed.

excellent points. You might read my hub, "Pen Pals." Prisons in many states are simply warehouses that are underfunded or don't see the value of rehabilitation programs. Then a convict is released with a choice of minimum wage minus victem restitution, or reverting to skills that they have learned in prison to make far more money.

Hello Nan,

An excellent article. You and papajack here put forth good arguments on the rehabilitation side of the question. I can hear the other side coming at you already --"They're criminals. Why should we put out public money for them? (They don't even want to put money out for the poor children in our society.)

Thanks papajack, and Immartin; I know about the poor children, and I personally try to help save them, before they get into real trouble. We need to remember that they are human beings. Somewhere in life they fell down. We can help or the situation gets worst. I taught middle and high school and the kids were not all bad, but some were already a plague to society. We want to be able to live in our homes or we be over taken by bad society. We need to realize that not everyone is empowered with a lot of knowledge! The Bible teaches us that inorder to be blessed, you should help the poor and unfortunate in this world. Jesus did, and it seems that most people don't want to help.

Good points. I originally asked this question because I happen to know so many that are looking for jobs and they cannot find them. They are so desperate to get their lives straight but no one will let them.

I am glad to hear from you. We need to bond together to make our communities and lives more productive. We are human beings and we need to remember that!

Hi again, Nan,

I left my earlier comment tongue in cheek, not saying I don't agree with you, but feeling worn down from some responses to some of my work that tries to get help for exploited, abused children and those without health care. The world is full of those who would rather spout ideology and fundamentalism, than actually do anything to solve a problem. It gets me down and I'm tired of beating a drum that no one wants to march to. Your humble and heartfelt comments left me feeling I owned you an apology. You are right. Jesus did instruct us to "love each other as I have loved you." In fact, they were his last instructions.

Thank you for reminding me of that. I now feel stronger, ready to gird my loins and get back into the battle.

Thanks Immartin, you are right too! Most people think that if you can't take care of yourself, then you can die. In my home city, they feel strong about putting people in jail, and in prison. What they fail to understand is that it is a law of return, if you don't help it becomes worst, and not better.
