2004 Film makes up with Intellect what it lacks for Budget

Besides winning 2 awards from the Sundance Film Festival in 2004, what's even more amazing about this excellent film is that it was made on a $7,000 budget. Primer stars Shane Carruth who is the writer, producer and lead actor. His co-star David Sullivan also helped produce the film and is also a pivotal character in this drama/thriller/sci-fi film. I don't want to give too much away, as I am the type of person who can't enjoy a movie if I know what is going to happen, but it is basically about 2 friends who make a great scientific discovery.

I do have to warn you the movie starts out slow, and the only thing that annoyed me in the beginning was the sound quality. As the group of four work in Aaron's (Shane Carruth) garage for no obvious reason it is a little hard to understand what they are saying or what they are talking about. But believe me, if you like "smart" movies, this film is definitely worth the wait. The longer the film goes the better it gets. Its also a film I wouldn't multitask in front of for your first watching or you will definitely be confused. I have seen on many of the Primer fan boards that many people suggest watching it twice in a row to get everything. I think one sitting with full attention is plenty to enjoy this film though.

I'd recommend renting the movie before deciding to purchase it although I know this movie is a little bit harder to find than the average film. One fan of primer sums this movie up best when he said "it truly embodies the independent spirit of film making" (from imbd.com). Its ashame Hollywood doesn't have more low budget movie success stories such as this one.

I have also incuded a You Tube Trailer of the movie below as well as a Google Video which appears to be the entire movie if you would like to see it on your computer.

I am so glad I'm not the only one. This film is so intellectually stimulating. Someone is probably going to remake it and make $$$$$$$$$$$!

I never thought about that but you're right. Imagine that movie with a big name actor and the Hollywood marketing machine behind it, it could make a ton of money.

Mos def.  okay, let's cast it.  we need only the two leads.

John Cera from Superbad and Juno can be the soft spoken one and that guy who does the commercials for mac vs. PC, he's dating Drew Barrymore?  I don't know his name but he looks like he could have a dark side worth exploring (Justin Long) or wait..better yet Emile Hirsch or never mind I got it.

We need to go younger than Hirsch so why not the other one from Alpha Dog, the kid they kidnap... ummmm  Anton Yelchin.  If you missed it he was great in 'House of D' with Robin Williams, Erykah Badu and real-life husband and wife Tea Leoni & David Duchovny.   This is Duchovny's writer/director debut if not mistaken. Cool flick.  It's like A Bronx Tale in that it's beauty and brutality both from come from growing up in the harsh city streets.

NYC, baby.  That's my heart.

Yeah I hate that mac guy, don't know why I just can't stand him. The kid from Alpha Dog might work, he was good in that film. Cera's definitely a good fit, he's great in arrested development too.

Might be a little off topic but have you seen that movie Pi? Another great movie for the cerebral although that one is a little hard core for the mainstream.

LOL. That is the very first DVD I ever bought. Have you seen the movie "Das Experiment" starring the boyfriend guy from Run Lola Run? Hit Sh![ is that an intense movie.

If you like these kinda movies anyway, check out my HUB >> Best Indie Films - Comedy (A-B) it is the first of an alphabetical series so if you wanna, go check it out, I'd love to hear which ones you haven't seen or ones i like but you hate, whatever.

I'll check it out. I'm not real big on comedies but definitely enjoy a good laugh if I watch a good one, although I'm big for the Old School/Dodge Ball kind of mindless humor. I'll have to check out Das Experiment. After I got Pi from Netflix a few years ago I ran into a gamut of decent flicks of a similiar genre but none that blew me away.

Another messed up movie that I love is "A Scanner Darkly"

I just watched primer and I don't think it needs any 'remake' or anything fance or big name actors. This is as good as it gets, right up until the end. If you're a sci-fi fan or electronics buff you'll get most of their initial talk just fine.

Please don't let hollywood spoil this brilliant movie.
