No Cosigner Private Student Loans

Private student loans with no cosigner are generally available to those you have good credit and are students in good standing with whatever college they attend. These types of loans vary from traditional student loans in that they actually require a credit check and are not part of the program for loans whose interest is supplemented by the federal government.
Private student loans with no cosigner are usually used as a last resort because there are so many other forms of financial aid available to students. Those that need to use these types of loans should make sure that they don’t qualify for any other forms of financial aid before even considering applying for a private student loan.

The first step in applying for any type of financial aid is to fill out the FAFSA. This document will help the federal government and the state government to figure out how much the student can afford to pay towards their education. Once the FAFSA is filled out and the student’s contribution is calculated, the student will be informed of how much they can expect to pay towards their education. It’s important for students to understand that tuition and books are not the only things that are considered when the cost of attendance is totaled. The system also figures in cost of living such as housing, food and transportation.

Financial aid cannot exceed the total cost of going to school as figured by the FAFSA and your school. Once the total cost is figured, the student’s contribution is deducted and what is left over is the amount of financial aid the student qualifies for. The first thing that most students qualify for is a grant called the Pell Grant. This grant does not have to be repaid. The funds are sent directly to the school. If these funds are not enough and the student qualifies for more financial aid, then state grants will also be considered and offered if the student meets the qualifications for the grant. Usually state grant sonly require that the FAFSA was filled in and submitted by the spring deadline. Even if a student does not qualify for the state grant, they may qualify for scholarships from the school itself. These scholarships are usually based on attendance and financial need.

Private Grants and Scholarships!

Of course, there are also private grants and scholarships that the student may be eligible for. The student needs to research what grants and scholarships they qualify for by enrolling in programs that specialize in scholarship research, finding out about any scholarships that are offered via community groups that they belong to and talking with area businesses to find out what scholarships they offer and what the terms are to qualify for them.

There are student loans that are available to students regardless of their credit. These are used following all other grants and scholarships. The requirement for these types of loans are that the student be enrolled at least half time and is in good academic standing with the school they attend.

All of these types of aid should be considered before private student loans without a cosigner are even thought of. Using these available resources can saves students a fortune in interest and loan payments.
