For years I have used craigslist.org. I like to make furniture and what I don't have room to keep, I sell on craigslist. I've always enjoyed it and never had any complaints. Until now. A puppy fell into my lap and I couldn't bear to leave her where she was. I took her in, trained her, gave her the love she deserved and began looking for a good home for her. While I would love to be able to keep her, this is an impossibility. Before I found her, my roommate and I already had 3 full grown dogs and a puppy. My roommate moved out and took 2 of the dogs, so we each had 2 which was manageable. I had to find a good home for Izzy.
I asked around, made flyer's, and was unsuccessful in finding Izzy a new home. She is darling and house trained so I was SHOCKED! Refusing to take her to the pound, I opted to place an ad on craigslist. While I know that you are not able to sell animals on the site, she is not for sale! We just want her to have a good home. I placed the ad and within minutes, I had a response. It seemed kismet. The family was wonderful, the environment seemed great. We arranged a meeting. I packed my beloved puppy and took her to meet her potential new family.
Upon arrival, everything was perfect. Izzy was wonderful with the children (1 and 2yrs) and the woman said "I don't want her to leave this house." The first meeting turned quickly into my final good bye. I was more than comfortable with this because it fit so well. My prayers had been answered: Izzy had a great new home. Everything was as it should be.
I came home and responded to the other inquiries I had and told them Izzy was no longer available. A few hours later, I checked my email and, apparently, the family's other dog doesn't like Izzy...they want to give her back. I now have to get this dog and start over.
My problems are not as much with Craigslist as those who use it, though I have erks about both, I will explain below.
- When I wrote my ad, which was perfectly in line with their rules and specifications, it was flagged ad deleted - for no reason - twice. Apparently other users of craigslist can flag your add over and over and get it removed. But why? Why would someone do this when I am trying to find a good home for a great dog?
- There is a large problem I read about that some of the dogs exchanged on craigslist are going to puppy mills and being mistreated, making it absolutely NECESSARY to screen anyone interested in your animal!!
- if you are getting an animal and have and older animal at home, it generally takes a day or two for the old grump to get used to the new puppy.
- As I'm now re-responding to those interested in Izzy, I have to wait for those who have her to give her back to me before I can find her a new home.
- Craigslist makes it impossible for me to advertise in the two large cities I live between, making it even more difficult for me to find the perfect home.
- This is an animal we're talking about here, not a chair that didn't look good in your living room. I told the woman to think about it and she wanted the dog - now I have to go get Izzy, having put her through the trauma of staying with strangers for a night.
- To make it worse, I am no longer getting a response from her.
The point is this: use caution when using Craigslist! Be ready for the 'buyer' to change their mind. Don't think 'all sales are final,' especially when it's a living creature - because people think that the "perfect dog" is perfect over night.
While Craigslist makes it easy to get rid of old furniture, finding a good home for an animal is getting ever more difficult. If anyone knows of a good way to find a good home for a loving pet, please. I'm going back to the beginning with my craigslist Russian roulette and hope I can find the perfect family for little Izzy.
As a pet owner who prides myself in rescuing animals, nursing them back to health and finding them new, happy homes, I am disheartened by the many I am finding that appear to share my passion for animals, but lack the drive, follow-through, and persistence that is required to truly help animals in need. Also, Izzy is a well-behaved, cute puppy! I am in shock and saddened that she still doesn't have the home she deserves and is currently stuck with strangers!
If any other pet owners or lovers have advice or any tips on how to find a good home for a great dog, PLEASE HELP! I have exhausted every possible avenue I know of and am desperate to find the perfect match!
And this Story's Happy Ending!
I am happy to report that Izzy found a great home with a great family. And, yes, I found them on craigslist. Thank you so much to Joy and James for giving Izzy the love she deserves! Her new best friend, America fell in love with her immediately and we knew we had the perfect fit! While I probably won't use craigslist to find a home for a pet in the future, persistence and thorough examination of interested parties can really pay off! Izzy and her great new family is proof of this and that there are still great pet lovers who are willing to adjust to save a puppy!
Thanks again to Joy and James!!!

I love you BadCo! And I think I may have found her a home!! you rock my world BadCo!
Yayyy that's really good news, am pleased for you. Love you too my friend, I also forgot to say Izzy is almost as cute looking as you, Rock On !!!
You are a true champion! Izzy looks like a great dog. If you ever find yourself in that situation again, try walking the dog around the area's pet stores and dog parks. I've placed out dogs to new families in the past and have had a lot of luck with that....
thanks bloodnlatex! Good tip...though there is only one pet store and no dog parks in my town :) I had to go to the major surrounding cities to find her home anyway. I did like that I got to see where she would be living and watch her interact with her new family! Today has been a good day!!
That is great to hear. It sounds like you're a great person with a huge heart. Have a great day!
What you did for Izzy is amazing. Some people wouldn't have helped her at all, and others, while they would help would have taken her to a shelter when the frustration started. You stuck through it with her and found her a good loving home with a friend to play with to boot!!
You're doing good things out there - and this wold needs that!!
Many blessings to you
Ginney
You really did a good deed for a good dog, missalyssa. There are too many dogs (and cats in general) that are abandoned and mistreated everywhere. For you to take the time to find Izzy a proper home is an of benevolence on your part. It's good to hear that there is a happy ending for him. Thank you for sharing this with me.
Nicely done! It's good to hear a good news story - even if you seemed to take forever to accomplish your self appointed task.
There is also some good information on here about craigslist.
Congratulations on your HubNugget Wannabe nomination. Seems you certainly deserve the recognition.
I know a lot of people that had problems with Craigslist, in several areas. There has been a lot of scams reported to me by people who use Craigslist and I personally have had problems with them. Thank you so much for your insight!
Thanks to everybody for your kind words! I was just doing what was right for little Izzy! And thanks for the congratulations Duchess - I didn't even know I was nominated until I read your comment!
Congratulations for your Hubnugget nomination! :) To vote for this hub click here: http://hubpages.com/_hubnuggets10/hub/cirque-du Enjoy the Hubnuggets Festivities!
Thanks so much ripplemaker! This Hubnugget business is exciting!! I appreciate the support!
missalyssa thank you for making a difference. I currently have 2 rescue dogs. Unfortunate, the wishy washy family, but I think you could encounter the same situation elsewhere. I do know what you mean though. On Craig's list, calling you back, promising the sell to you, promising to buy from you etc means nothing. It's a real crap shoot.
missalyssa congrats on your hubnugget nomination and a great contribution. Its difficult to explain human nature sometimes.
Wow you really got the point across..you got my vote, craigslist should change their name to wedontcarelist
Thanks to everyone who read and voted! I'm happy to report that I got an update on Izzy and she is doing great! Will get new pics of her up soon! Thanks again!
This is a great hub, alyssa. You are such a sweetheart and beacuse of you, Izzy has a great home with ppl and a friend who love her. And better yet it seems like you get to visit her when you want to which is great! and yea craiglist users sound like arses for flagging your ad again and again. I don't use craigslist much..might go on there to look up jobs but that is about it. Glad you found Izzy her true home. :-)
Look people were not here to by hub caps to fit on our classics olde mobile..were here to vote..and vote we shall...so don't get cheap and settle with your metal wheel covers..go all out..because I can tell you one thing no one will by that car on craig's list...think about it...
I have used Craig's List but there are some vicious flag monkeys who seem to flag as a sport, so I gave up using the service. I am glad Izzy found a good home :)
Dearest MissAlyssa,
Blessings to you for working so diligently to find a GREAT dog a GREAT home!!
In this economy, people are unable to keep their pets at an alarming rate!!
I have done animal/pet rescue for over 30 years!! It never ceases to amaze me that a member of the family is so quickly discarded!!
Thank you for bringing this story to all our attention!! If each of us would spend a little time finding good pets good homes, our shelters would be less crowded and we wouldn't have to "kill" so many!! It's barbaric!!
Blessings always, Earth Angel!!
P.S. I currently have six rescues, two canine and four feline, none were placeable because of their "issues!!" They are the BEST family I have ever had!!
In our small town, people bring the puppies, kittens, bunnies, pygmy goats, etc, to the park on Farmers Market Day when lots of people are around. I think that works for some people here.
Thanks Crazd- I'm glad you liked it!
Ducky- you rock my world! Thanks for the great comments!
bayareagreatthing- I;m glad izzy is in a great new home too!
Earth Angel - Bless people like you who recuse! I keep as many as I can, but every animal deserves a chance and I will do everything in my power to find the right home for a great animal! I joke that the one's I have are 'special needs' lol. one was rescued from a pit fighting ring, and I have a killer cat....he sizes up small children....But I adjust, take responsibility and help when I can, as you do :)
WannaB - Excellent idea! Thanks for the tip. While Craig's list found Izzy a home, if I foster another rescue, I will definitely consider the farmers market!
Thanks to all who voted for me!!!! Izzy's stpry is now a HubNugget!!!
This is a great topic to Hub about. I have this issue a lot: people will change their minds, and not show up to check out a product when they say they will, which is totally inconvenient. Thankfully I've never had such a difficult task as placing an animal in a home, and caring enough to follow up and make sure things work.
