Professional disability insurance is a type of disability insurance that covers the salary of the employee if the employee encounters an accident or gets ill. The employee’s claim is, of course, still subject to reviews by a policy adjustor who will afterwards either approve or deny the claim. The employee should provide the following while claiming the insurance benefits: the doctor’s note, the approximate period of time needed for the employee to heal, the employee’s job before the accident or the illness occurred, the date of the injury’s occurrence, the place where the injury happened, and finally, the amount of salary that the employee receives per month. If the policy adjustor needs more information, s/he will contact the employee or the employer. Most of professionals thought that their savings would be sufficient if they got into an accident or if they got ill. But sadly, even their lifetime savings won’t be enough to cover the expenses if ever such an unfortunate thing does happen.

Professional Disability Insurance is a great way prepare for the most unexpected incidences in your life. Being prepared in advance will ensure you that during an emergency, you and your family won’t have to suffer financial difficulties. Professional disability insurance must be taken care of once you are employed by a company or an organization. In times when the employee won’t be able to go to work due to any injuries, this disability insurance will cover the employee’s salary until the employee is back on his feet again. Some big companies offer this coverage as a portion of one’s employment package. The company pays for the premiums of the policy even though some professionals take this disability insurance for granted. They reason out that they’re line of work is not dangerous or risky, or that they are in perfect health, but the truth is that life has a way of surprising you with unfortunate things, and accidents and illnesses can really cripple you financially if you’re unprepared.


Disability insurance can be bought by individuals or groups. Group disability insurance is commonly provided by an employer or purchased individually from a sponsoring professional association. Group disability insurance usually more affordable than individually purchased ones and some professionals would rather purchase group policies even if they don’t offer customized benefits which are only available in individual insurance policies. It is important to note that the rates may also increase over time and premiums can also be adjusted annually.

There are times when the employer doesn’t take care of the cost of the Professional Disability Insurance coverage. The employee would then have to pay for his own Professional Disability Insurance premiums and bear in mind that the higher your salary gets, the bigger the coverage should be. The employee should also remember that a number of days may need to pass before s/he can begin to receive regular payments from their preferred policy. This is called the elimination period, and usually, the best policies have the shortest elimination periods.
