Professional Dog Training vs. Self Training

Training your dog is completely necessary and beneficial.

He doesn't have to be trained to compete in professional shows, but he needs to be trained on the dos and don'ts of living with you. Untrained dogs often end up in animal shelters because the owners can no longer handle their behaviors. Many people rely on professional training, because they think that it is the only sure way to train their pooches. In fact, at-home training can be just as effective. What you want from your dog can make all the difference between your training methods and professional ones.

If you start when your dog is a puppy, then at-home training may be all you need. Taking the time to teach your dog desired behaviors is beneficial in many ways. First, you are spending time with your dog. Your dog looks to you for leadership and attention. Spending ten minutes a day working with your dog will build a great companionship. Second, at-home training gives you the freedom to work on what you see as necessary. By teaching your dog not to dig under your fence or bite the neighbors, you are focusing on what you think is important. Third, you are at home where you want the behaviors to occur. It's hard to housetrain a dog if you are not in your house. Your dog can learn more quickly in his normal environment. Fourth, with the exception of equipment you may purchase, at-home training only takes time and patience, not money.

Professional training is another great alternative.

Professional trainers should be knowledgeable of many different training techniques. They can focus on specific behavior correction or general training. Being in a class with other owners and dogs also helps with the socialization aspect of training. Your dog will get accustomed to being around others, allowing the two of you to spend more time together in public. Professional trainers may have insight that you do not. If one training method isn't working, then they can offer a variety of additional techniques.

How to pick the perfect dog

Choosing which one is best for you often depends upon your situation.

If you have adopted an adult dog (or your adult dog has no previous training experience), then it may be a little harder to teach him obedience techniques. It is not impossible, but it may take more time. Some people see this as a reason to consult a professional. They believe that in the time it would take them to train their dog, a professional could have already completed the training.

What if your dog has developed a destructive behavior that you can't seem to get rid of?

Or, even worse, what if your pooch doesn't view you as his leader? Problems like this may require professional training. If a dog has been allowed to behave a certain way all of his life, then he may not take you seriously when you try to correct the behavior.

Maybe you feel unqualified to train your pup at home.

At-home training can be easy, but it does take time. If you feel like you need guidance in the process, then professional obedience classes can help. In the classes, you are paired with the dog and are teaching him the desired behavior. But, you have professional guidance and supervision.

It is important to remember that no training technique is guaranteed.

A good trainer will not promise to correct any type of behavior. Sometimes, you can work days and weeks with your dog at home and produce no results. If you have the time and energy, then you should first try to train your dog yourself. If you are not getting very far, then consider hiring a trainer. On the other hand, if you want your dog to compete in shows, then you need to learn the "tricks of the trade" from a trainer first. Obedience training is an ongoing process. If you start with a trainer and complete a course, then you should still be willing to work with your pooch at home.

Tips: Let Your Dog Know You're Not Leaving For Good

A well-trained dog is important.

The way you want to train your dog is up to you. Some dogs, often adult ones, require the help of a professional. Professionals know a variety of training methods; so, if one doesn't work, there are always backups. Training at home is often easier, because your dog is in his usual environment. Always keep in mind that training won't produce overnight results, but it will create a stronger bond between you and your pooch!
