Rockstar Voices Use Awesome Projection

If you're a beginning or intermediate vocalist, and you just can't seem to blast out the notes with the power that you want, don't worry. You're not alone.

Maybe you're recovering from a cold, your voice is still a little raw from the night before from yelling at the neighbors, or you're just learning the basics. Whatever the reason is, sometimes it's very difficult to get the most out of your potential rockstar voice.

I know that when I finally stop having the sniffles and I have to perform, my voice isn't going to be up to par, but there are things you can practice and focus on to pull through. Listen to these simple tips for vocal projection and try them out for yourself.

1. Learn to breathe from your belly and not your shoulders.

When you get ready to let out your powerful voice, you can't suck the hats off the people in the front row. If you're planning on doing that, you'll begin losing your breath a lot quicker than you expected.

If you practice inhaling air without moving your shoulders, you'll notice that your belly expands like a balloon. This is creating an air tank that you constantly fill and refill when you sing. It helps your rockstar voice to use a little visualization like the balloon analogy.

2. Don't worry about the pitch as much.

This tip is a little more about mind over matter than any other thing. Pitch is obviously very important to a singer, but it's not everything. Frankly, sometimes worrying about pitch can bury a singer.

There are many times a singer will start overcompensating their voice to create good pitch and you might recognize this as that nasal voice. They sound like they're singing through their nose.

Now, this might be a very good strategy for you. It doesn't work for me personally. Using a very nasally voice in hopes of hitting pitches accurately throws me off. So the lesson here is that sometimes you have to let it go and worry about being heard. You'll definitely notice a change in the broadness of your rockstar voice.

3. Stay focused on expanding your diaphragm.

Expanding your diaphragm goes along with breathing from your belly. There's a section of your rib cage that actually moves with the expansion of your lungs and retaining that expanded feeling can really help.

When you can expand your diaphragm indefinitely for the remainder of your song, you allow your lungs and belly to contract and move as they please.

This technique will allow you to house more air and create more powerful notes with your rockstar voice.

4. Sing with conviction.

Singing with conviction is a huge part of singing with power. You'll notice that professional vocalists don't sing with their legs together staring at the floor. They have their heads cocked back, their legs spread shoulder length, and their eyes aflame with determination.

You need to have the same enthusiasm with your rockstar voice as they do. A large portion of revealing power and projection in your voice comes from enjoying what you do.

Yes, it's that easy. Sing those mean lyrics like your telling off your ex-girlfriend to her face. Let loose those sad songs like your puppy died last week. What every song you perform, you need to sing with conviction.

Like I tell everyone else, there's no single way to create better projection in a singer's voice. And these tips may not even work for you.

All I know is that they help me and they will not detriment your rockstar voice in any form. If you learn to breathe from your belly, don't worry as much about pitch, use your diaphragm, and sing it like you mean it, you'll definitely improve.
