What do you do to properly prepare for a job interview? If you are not following the steps below, your chances of getting the job could drastically decline. Read and follow through carefully.

Steps to Prepare for a Job Interview

  1. First, be sure you do a serious in-depth research on the company you're applying to. Google the firm and learn whatever you can that will help you better understand their corporate values and how you would fit into their culture. Figure out what you would contribute and ways your skills can benefit the company. When you do your research, you will be able to easily answer questions about why you want to work there.
  2. Practice how you will answer some common interview questions. These could be: "What are your strengths?", "What qualities would you bring to the company?", "Why did you leave your last job?"  Knowing what you want to learn from the position will guide you to answering questions with ease.
  3. Think of your own questions to ask at the end of the interview. This is also why researching is essential. When you do your homework, your questions will come out more genuine. Examples are: "Who will I report to as my immediate supervisor?"  "Are there any immediate tasks that need to be completed first?"  "How will my performance be evaluated?"
  4. Know your directions ahead of time! Print out a map the day before. Rushing at the last minute could make you late. Estimate the length of time it will take to get to the firm, including traffic and how far the parking garage is. You want to be about 10 minutes early. IT'S BETTER TO BE EARLY THAN ON TIME.
  5. Have your resume and references with you on hand in a nice portfolio. Print out 3-4 copies of each since you may be interviewed by more than one manager. This will make you look extra prepared and organized.
  6. Dress for success! Know the proper attire to wear. Some organizations may not require a suit, but dress to fit the atmosphere of the company. if you are honestly unsure, ask the HR department! You won't embarrass yourself if you ask. This actually shows courtesy!

Steps to NOT Do

  • Do not arrive outrageously early! By "outrageously early", I mean more than 20 minutes prior to your interview. I've had someone come 45 minutes early to a job interview before, and that very much ruined her chances. You have an appointment for a reason. Employers are not waiting around for you to arrive; remember, they are busy!
  • Do not forget the name of whom you'll be meeting with. There is more than one manager in a firm where multiple positions could be open.
  • Do not overload on cologne or perfume as the scent can be a distraction. Keep it light, including your make-up.

It's a tough job market, so in order to increase your chances of getting a job, follow each step accurately. Missing one step could cost you that career opportunity. Good luck!
