Swine Flu Vaccines Pro and Con

Four versions of the H1N1 vaccine have been approved by the FDA. These vaccines are expected to become available in early October.

These versions are:

Sanofi Pasteur’s injected vaccine: Approved for ALL age groups (infants 6 months of age through adulthood and the elderly). It comes in several forms:

  • Prefilled single ½ dose syringe with NO mercury – for infants 6 thru 35 months of age.
  • Prefilled single full dose syringe with NO mercury – for anyone 3 years and older.
  • Single-dose (full-dose) vial with NO mercury – for anyone 3 years and older.
  • Multidose bottle (contains ten full doses or twenty ½ doses) WITH 25 mcg of mercury per full dose – for anyone 6 months and older (infants 6 to 35 months would get a half dose (0.25 ml), 3 years and older would get the full 0.5 ml dose).

Other ingredients include: the viral proteins, gelatin, formaldehyde, polyethylene glycol p-isooctyphenyl ether, sucrose.

CSL’s injected vaccine: Approved for anyone 18 years and older. It comes in two forms:

  • Prefilled single-dose syringe with NO mercury.
  • Multidose bottle with ten doses WITH 24.5 mcg of mercury per dose.

Other ingredients include: the viral proteins, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate, potassium phosphate, calcium, taurodeoxycholate, egg protein, 2 antibiotics, and beta-propiolactone.

Novartis’s injected vaccine: Approved for anyone 4 years and older. It comes in two forms:

  • Prefilled single-dose syringes with a trace amount of mercury (less than 1 mcg because 99% of it is filtered out).
  • Multidose bottle with ten doses WITH 25 mcg of mercury per dose.

Other ingredients include: the viral proteins, sodium chloride, phosphate, egg proteins, two antibiotics, betapropiolactone, nonylphenol ethoxylate.

MedImmune’s live virus nasal spray vaccine: Approved for anyone 2 years through 49 years of age. There is no mercury.

Other ingredients include: the live viruses, MSG, pig gelatin, arginine, sucrose, potassium phosphate, an antibiotic,

IMPORTANT: Product inserts state that these vaccines have NOT undergone significant research. These vaccines are similar to other flu vaccines and as such are deemed to be safe.

It is important to realize that infants will receive 2 doses of the regular flu vaccine PLUS 2 doses of the swine flu vaccine. While there may be no significant danger to receiving the vaccine, it is clearly unprecedented for anyone, including children to receive four doses in one year. No one can predict the possible side affects or risks.

QUESTION: Should I get the flu shot or have my children vaccinated?

ANSWER: It is difficult for doctors to make a recommendation. You should consider your lifestyle first of all. Do you or your children spend time in large crowds of people? (schools, malls, movie theaters, or other places? Do you practice good hand washing techniques? Do you live in a rural or urban area? What about your immune system? Do you or your children easily contract illnesses?

There are side effects and risks with any vaccination. While the risk factor is low it is important to become aware of any risks before you make your informed decision.

Great hub Smireless both interesting and informative. The worst case of flu I ever had was in my mid-20's when I got a flu vaccine I have never had the flu vaccine again nor have I had another case of flu up to this point.

Hi Tom,

I have heard many people say almost the same thing. I wouldn't take the flu shot for years because I suffer from so many respiratory allergies but I finally decided to try it and had no side affects for several years. I have not made up my mind about this new vaccine!

Sorry I have been away, but Now I am back and will be checking in with all my friends articles! Thanks for commenting!

Hi, Smireles, I have missed you.

I have never had a flu shot because I am allergic to feathers and the health care workers advise me not to get it. I must have a good immune system because I haven't had the flu for years.

Thanks, Judydianne. I am battling food allergies and they pretty much wiped me out. My sister requested this article when she got an email from social services in Missouri so I checked it out.

fantastic and fearless of you Smireles...I haventhad the nerve to write all tis out...the thing that concerns me is 1)H1N1 was here, in the 1970's...many who say thats the only flu vaccine they received got that one 2)not significantly researched3) formaldehyde, pig geltin, polyethelene gylcol? ugh the latter is first ingredient in antifreeze...lovely

but the best is you put in all the alterntives #1 is lave losmanos! wash your hands!! good job!!

Thank you RNMSN! I am worried about my grandchildren. I recently heard there were three Swine flu cases here in Houston from an inside source. Interestingly enough they did not require negative airflow isolation rooms. That seems strange to me since I assumed the sickness is airborn. Am I wrong?

You are right. That does seem wrong. I work in an inpatient pharmacy here in Minneapolis. Anyone who comes in with flu like symptoms in the ICU we put them in a negative airflow room until we can rule out H1N1. It seems kinda odd that they did not do that in the hospital that you are talking about.

Thanks, twista21. I am concerned about the negative airflow room because it seems to me a very big health risk to staff, patients, and visitors.

I was really worried about whether or not to get this for my children but then they came down with H1N1 2 weeks ago. Luckily they should now have their own antibodies and I do not have to worry about it.

I hope your children are doing well now! Was the illness severe?

I have not had a flu shot since I was a little kid and in about 25 years I have only had it twice. For me it just does not seem like something I need.

I used to work in healthcare and had the flu shot every year for several years but do not intend to get the H1N1 vaccine.
