Prostate Cancer And Diet

There are many clues that there is a relationship between our diet and prostate cancer. There is little evidence of prostate cancer in China and Japan yet when people from those countries migrate to other western countries the rate of prostate cancer among these men and the following generations increases to the levels we expect to see among western men.

The suggestion seems to be that a high fat diet that includes high levels of processed meat, animal fats and dairy products seems to offer little prevention of prostate cancer while a diet that includes lots of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish seems to be beneficial and may help prevent the growth of prostate cancer.

Facts About The Prostate

The prostate is a gland found only in males. As part of a man’s reproductive system it is an organ located in front of the rectum, under the bladder where it surrounds the urethra. The Urethra is the tube through which urine flows.

A normal healthy prostate gland is normally about the size of a walnut, complete with shell, in a young but mature adult male. Over the years it may grow a little but if the prostate should grow too large it presses down on the urethra which may slow or even stop the flow of urine from the bladder to the penis. The prostate is a gland and it's whole purpose is to make part of the seminal fluid which enables sperm to be carried out of the man’s body as part of semen.

There are many books and prostate diet guides available to buy online and they offer recommendations on foods that are thought to be helpful in preventing cancer developing and possibly even reducing the development of existing prostate cancers.

Some of the foods recommended are cooked tomatoes, cranberry juice and lots of other fruit and vegetables.

Other vitamins and minerals that might prove beneficial are vitamin E, selenium and green tea extract.
