Once you've learned more about the basics of home security, you'll now want to learn about the things you can do to make sure that your home is always protected, and the things you can do to facilitate your family's safety. You may wonder what more you can do than to install a home security system, but there are still things that you should think about, even if you own the more complicated, state of the adt home security system. There is still no substitute for smart thinking on the homeowner's part, so remember to do your best to make sure that your home and family are kept safe.

Before purchasing a security system, you should identify whether or not your home is safe and impervious to burglars. Many think their home could withstand an intruder, but have never really tested their home to see whether it is secure. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that your home is safe from burglars or any other intruders that may try to invade it.

Spend some time testing the structural integrity of your home. Try kicking at your doorframes and make sure that they are secure. If they are loose, reinforce them. Also, make sure that your doors are solid wood or metal. If you own any doors that are hollow, replace them immediately. Check all of the locks on the doors and windows around your house. Have your spouse or an older child wait on the inside of the home while you circle the outside and try to get in while the doors and windows are locked. If any are loose or easy to get through, replace them. Take a walk around your property and identify places that it would be easy for someone to conceal themselves in around your house, such as bushes or shrubs. Reconsider your landscaping if it makes your home too private or too concealed; this makes it an easy target for burglars because they know that they are less likely to be noticed if your home is less visible from the street or other neighbors. If you do feel that some of your shrubbery makes your home too private, consider trimming them to keep your home in plain view from the street.

If you've done everything you can via a state of the art home alarm system in order to protect your home; lights, cameras and more, you may think that you can sit back and relax in the peace of mind that you have that your home is safe. But even if you have the most cutting edge security technology installed in your home, there are still a few things that you can do to further protect your home.

Never let on to the fact that you are away from your home. If you are going on a business trip or vacation, take measures to ensure that your home still looks completely inhabited, with random light timers and making sure papers don't accumulate in your yard.

Make sure that all of your entrances to the home are well lit. This does not only mean your main entrance to your home, but patio doors and windows around the house as well. Install spotlights that will deter intruders for fear of being spotted by you or a neighbor. Take a moment to assess the danger of an intruder entering through the garage. Many homeowners think to install motion detectors and alarm systems around exterior doors and windows, but forget about their garage access. If your garage has a door into your home, make sure it is protected as well.

If you and your family are planning a summer vacation this year, you may be concerned about keeping your home and possessions safe while you are away. Homes without an adt home security system where the tenants are gone for long periods of time are easy targets for would-be burglars and intruders. If you want to make sure your home is kept safe from intruders, follow these simple steps to deter anyone from trying to enter your home while you and your family are enjoying your vacation.

Don't advertise the fact that you are gone. Burglars look for things like stacked up newspapers on your front porch, or an excess of mail in your mailbox. These things tell them that you've been gone for a while and the home is vacant. If you are going away, suspend you newspaper delivery service for a week or two, or arrange with a neighbor to pick up your mail every other day. This will keep the front of your home free from telltale signs that your home is empty. If you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, pay a landscaping company or neighborhood teenager to come by and mow your lawn to keep it looking neat and manicured, the same as it would look if you were still in town.

Install a random light timer in your home, in high traffic areas like your living room and kitchen. These random light times turn on and off at random times during the day, making it seem as if there are people in the home. Simply seeing lights on is a big deterrent for burglars or intruders, and can save your home from being broken into. It can be especially helpful if your home is being staked out by burglars, something fairly common. If a burglar is watching your home and seeing lights being turned on and off, they are more likely to discern that you are home, and leave your house alone, making way for easier targets. Make sure you also have a reliable security system that can keep your home safe while you're gone.

If you are ready to outfit your home with a new security system, you may be wondering what the best set up will be. The truth is, if you want your home to be completely protected, you need to set your security system up while thinking like a thief. This means looking at your home as an intruder might, identifying weak spots, and being proactive about protecting your family. Acting and thinking like a thief can help you identify potential weak spots in your home's security, so that you can fix them before leaving it to chance.

A thief might stake out your home and identify when you are home or out by when the lights are on and off at night. They may also know when you go to bed at night. To remedy this, consider purchasing a random light timer, that turns lights on and off at random times. You know it's simply a timer, a thief may see it as someone turning the kitchen light on in the middle of the night and leave your house and family alone. This is especially important when you're gone on vacation. Even if you're only planning to be gone a short weekend, it is plenty of time for an intruder to enter your home and take your belongings.

A thief will also know which doors and windows are easy access points to enter the house. For instance, if you never lock your back door due to an outdoor pet, a thief may see that and note that it is a weak point in your home security. Make sure all of these places are locked and secure. Keep all main floor windows and doors securely locked as well. Remember that most thieves are not amateurs. They are practiced criminals who know the tricks of their trade very well. You need to make sure that you think of your home from every angle before resting at night.
The best way to deter a thief is using security system to set off alarms when the home is breached. This way not only will it scare off the intruder, but will warn you and your family as well.

Your home is your castle, and you want to do the maximum in order to protect it. That means not only installing a technical home alarm system, but also doing what you can to ensure that your home stays safe. Teach your family about deterring intruders and how they can stay safe as well. Working together, you can be sure to create a safe haven for your family where you can rest easy every night knowing your things are secure from would-be criminals and petty thieves. You don't want any intruders in your home, so do your part as a homeowner to facilitate the safety of your family. Think of yourself as an extension to your home security system, and do you part to keep your home locked down from intruders. Although it may seem overly zealous, you'll find yourself in a secure environment that most intruders won't even try and tamper with.
