1. Find out the auction's inspection dates.

Before the real auction begins, the public car auction organizers would announce the inspection dates of the cars that would appear in the event. If you want to bid on a car, you have to go there on those dates first. You can simply appear a few minutes before the auction starts because you won't be confident about the car you're bidding on. You might end up with a nice looking car at the exteriors but a real junk on the inside.

2. Be prepared to pay the reservation fees.

If you decide to participate in the auction, you have to be decided about buying a car in the first place. Public car auctions require participants to pay a good amount of money as reservation fee. These fees are fully deductible from the actual price of the car you will bid on. That amount payable prior to participating in the auction and will serve as a security deposit of the auction house. The amount is supposed to keep bogus bidders away. If you can't raise the money you bid on a car, your reservation fee will be forfeited.

3. Check the cars you like as if you're buying it from a garage.

Public car auctions are nothing more than a garage car sale. They are selling used cars of varied conditions. Some cars are still in good shape. Others are nothing more than a rumble of iron and metals that can still pass off as a car. If you want to buy a car from the auction, check everything you want to check about it during the inspection dates. Make a list of the cars that you will bid on. List the cars according to your preference and priority. Put those you really want on top of the list.

4. Put a maximum price for each car.

Before the actual auction day start, try to determine how much money you are willing to pay for on the cars you have chosen. And don't go beyond those numbers. If you end up buying nothing, that's okay. It's better than having to go home with a ridiculously priced car that you don't really like. Organize your bids and see to it that you are a few hundred dollars below your top price. The price allowance would be for the added fees that you might need to cover when buying the car.

5. Bid wisely.

Bidding is nothing more than a game of poker. You have to suppress your emotions and leave the people around you guessing as to whether or not you really like the car or not. And you have to keep your sensors working too. You want to know if that person you are bidding against really want the car or not. This way, you can fight for the car or just let it go. Besides, your main purpose in participating an auction is to find the best car at the most affordable price. So don't be too over eager and let yourself loose in all the excitement.
