HubPages is a very successful site which is attracting more and more excellent writers every day to say nothing of the troves of new readers who are attracted to the site.

HubPages offers people the chance to make money with their writing and this is what attracts many to HubPages.

Like others who have been writing for HubPages for a long time, I frequently get requests from people new to HubPages asking for guidance and advice. Over the past couple of years I have written a number of Hubs offering advice on various aspects of writing and earning money from HubPages .

Given that i not only have written a number of Hubs on this topic but have also bookmarked for my own reference Hubs on this topic by others, I have decided to put together this Hub which summarizes and links to these How-To Hubs that I and others have written.

Hi Chuck I'm a very new hubber and wondered about the panels of related books on your hubs. Did you upload them or does Amazon or Ebay? Thanks for the info you've already given in the feature but I particularly wonder about the panels as this would seem to me to be a time-consuming skill to learn.

ainehanah - Welcome to HubPages.

As to your question about the books in the panels next to the text.

I opened accounts with Amazon and eBay from the Affiliate Page in HubPages (click on the "My Account" tab at the top of any page, then, under the "Your Account" (second heading on right) heading click on "Affiliate Settings" which is the middle option listed.

Clicking on the Affiliate Settings link will take you to the page with your Google and other Affiliate Setting options. Click on the Amazon and it will lead you through the setting up of an account with Amazon and then do the same for eBay.

Once set up you can add Amazon and eBay modules to new Hubs as you are creating a new Hub or when you edit an existing Hub and simply click on the "Amazon" and "eBay" icons in the "Add a Capsule" bar or box at the top of the page the same as you would to add a text, photo or other capsule.

Once you have the Amazon or eBay capsules in your Hub in edit mode you simply click on the "Edit" tab on the capsule to set it up.

With Amazon you have the option of clicking the "Choose Specific Products" or "Choose keywords" buttons. If you click on the "Choose specific products" you can choose to have anywhere from 1 to 10 items displayed and for each item you have to enter either an Amazon URL, an Amazon ASIN or ISBN number and that specific product will be displayed.

If you choose the "Choose Keywords" button you are again given the option of having 1 to 10 items displayed in the capsule and you also have the option of selecting from a specific product type such as books, DVDs, etc. or any type of product. You then enter one or more key words describing the type of items you want displayed.

I generally use the keywords option simply because it is faster and easier and, in most cases, this allows me to get a range of related products that will appeal to different people and increase the chances of their buying. With Amazon and eBay you are only paid when a product is actually sold and not when someone simply clicks on it (Amazon does make a record of the person's visit and, if they don't purchase but instead, think about it and come back directly to Amazon within a certain number of days from that computer you will get a commission on the sale).

Using keywords lets me first experiment with different words and view what comes up. In this case in the various Amazon and eBay capsules I used the following words or combination's (a different one in each capsule) "web writing", "web content", "freelance writing", etc.

In Amazon I also generally leave the product area option on "All" even when I am writing about specific books or movies as it is not uncommon for there to be a book, a movie (DVD), game, poster, toy, etc. all related to the same thing I wrote about and this saves me having to first search each of these areas on Amazon to see if they exist and then getting the identifier for each product type in the topic I want.

For eBay you get to choose to have from 1 to 6 items (products and product availability change on both eBay and Amazon so there is no guaranty that it will always display the full number of items you select, also with the Amazon specific product selection, when they are out of a product you selected that will no longer display as well) and have to enter key words in the eBay search box (by default, it will automatically enter the title of your Hub in this box, but I usually delete that and enter my own keywords). It also has a box where you can enter a specific eBay Seller ID which will then limit the items displayed to those that match the keywords AND are listed by that seller. This is good if you are selling the items in question on eBay or want to direct people to a specific seller for some reason.

Amazon and eBay don't generate as much money as Google AdSense but they do pay monthly on account balances are $10 or more. AdSense is the main revenue source while eBay and Amazon can provide a nice little addition to those revenue checks.

Chuck, what do you do in real life? It takes a master of the computer to learn and apply all of the techniques. I'm a teacher and learning. Thanks.

Nan - in real life, outside of HubPages, I am a Program Coordinator for a business an office vocational training program at a community college. I also teach an online economics course part-time for the same college and have a small network marketing business on the side.

I have worked with office computers my entire career starting with a Wang 2200 mini-computer with a 5 megabyte floppy disk before moving to the IBM PC running on DOS ver 1.0 and a single 5.25 inch floppy disk for storage.

I like this as a great summary for folks starting out. My one other piece of advice would be for new hubbers to actually write anything at all to start.

If you look at the stats

http://hubpages.com/stats/

you can see that only about 1 in 8 people who've signed up write anything at all. So for a new hubber, just go to the idea bank and write a hub on anything that catches your eye. You will then have done more than over 85% of the people who sign up.

This is one great collection of hub. Thanks for the writing and presentation. I have some queries:

I read G AdSense a/c is not easy to get. First one should write few hubs (or create a website), then apply. I have no idea whether I have reached at that level or not.

This is enough for the time being. Will ask more after reading these hubs that you have provided here.

Thank you so much for the collected advice. I came here looking for a place to simply express myself a few minutes a day, and realized HUBpages is so much more. I thought this would be a post and run for me, and instead, I'm finding myself spending a lot of free time researching and trying to get the hang of the rules, tips and tricks. Thank you for giving me a great jumping off point! I hope its the start of a long relationship between me and my hubs.
