The United States Mint yesterday, under the direction of Ed Mosy, unveiled the first American coin to bear a Spanish inscription. "Isla del Encanto", hovers over the United State Island's official flower, the Puerto Rican hibiscus. Which is accompanied by a Spanish colonial fort, on the back side. The front side of the quarter, contains the traditional face of George Washington. The United States Mint is planning on unveiling quarters for Guam, Samoa, the U. S . Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. The Spanish phrase means, "Island of Enchantment."

The Governor of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuno favors making Puerto Rico America's 51st state. Gov. Luis Fortuno was elected to the Governorship position last November 4th, 2008. He won the election with a 52% populace vote. In 1993, Puerto Rican's voted in an election, that would determined if Puerto Rico was to remain a self-governing commonwealth or America's 51st state. In a 49% to 46% victory, Puerto Rican's voted against the measure for statehood. Not much has changed since then. In 1998, the measure was defeated again. Since then little data has been collected, but, hope still lengers in the heart of many Puerto Rican's. Puerto Rico's last Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, rejected any notions of the island becoming a state. He instead supported the idea that Puerto Rico should be given  it's independence. Only 3% of the island's populace is in favor of independence for themselves and the island. Currently, residents of Puerto Rico can be called by the U.S. military at any time. They use U. S. currency and have one non-voting representative in Congress. In 2004, the past Governor of the island defeated his fellow opposing, pro-statehood politician by a narrow .026%. It seems over the past eight years, that Puerto Rico has shifted to even closer margins that those of the past.  The accountablity is due to America's political shift in the eyes of the world and the Iraq war.  The Puerto Rican peoples perspective stems from the fact, that they, are finally wanting the right to have voting power in the House and Senate. It seems, that the Puerto Ricans are wanting their voices to be heard.

Peggy, I'm not quite sure what I think about it. I almost think it's silly that they aren't. I thought it was a pretty coin too.
