Puppy Feeding
There are two main food type options when it comes to puppy feeding. Dry complete This puppy feeding method consists of small dry biscuit pieces that contain all the essential nutrients that a puppy needs for its physical and mental growth. It also works to keep the puppies teeth clean. It is available to purchase in large quantities and keeps for a long time. It is available in specialised puppy formula to provide the best possible balance of the nutrients required. It is easy to measure out as the amount needed is usually given in number of scoops. Puppies may take a few weeks to get used to dry food after weaning, but a little water can be added to soften the food. Tinned Meat (semi-moist) This puppy feeding method on its own can only provide part of a puppies required. A dry mixer has to be added to it and provide the other part of the balanced diet. Ready mixed tinned food is now available but is more expensive. This type of food does not keep as long as dry food and if a puppy does not all you put out it will need to be disposed of. There is a third method of puppy feeding which is homemade food. This is not an area to go into lightly as it is very difficult to provide all the nutrients required in the correct quantities. I have not ventured into this area because of the difficulties and the time required to make the food. Which ever method of puppy feeding you choose you would be well advised to buy the best food you can afford as premium foods are better for your puppy. In fact lesser quantities of premium food is often needed and so offsetting the initial higher cost. The amount of food needed and the number of meals required daily will be given to you on the packaging of the food in both methods and this should be adhered to unless a vet says to change it. If you do need change your puppies diet, do so over a week to help prevent digestion trouble The last rule is one of the most important. Always ensure that your puppy has access to a supply of fresh drinking water.
