Puppy Training Biting Problems

All puppies will bite so don't get upset thinking that you have a potential maniac on your hands that will as it gets older be running around the neighborhood biting everything in site.

It is part of the process of being a puppy. Dogs don't have hands so at this young age they use ther mouth to test out the world and see how it all feels and works.

But that's not to say that you should encourage it as it could turn into a problem later on down the line.

There are a few simple techniques you can use to control your puppy biting.

Puppy Training: Biting Problems Solved

Puppies learn how to fight by playing with the rest of their littermates. They will bite each other but if one bites just a little too hard the other will yelp letting the biter know that they went too far.

If you have ever seen a pack of dogs interact you will notice a few things. Firstly, when they are playing they will use their mouths and 'play bite' each other. If one of the dogs gets a bit too heavy handed and bites just a bit too hard the other dog will react.

Firstly they will probably yelp. This usually stops the play almost immediately as the biter realises they have bitten too hard.

Secondly, they may growl and snarl at the other dog.

Thirdly, they may even attack the other dog and hold them to the ground until they submit.

If we want to cure the problem biting with your puppy you have to work the same way. There is no point yelling at your puppy or hitting them or tapping them on the nose. It just won't work.

Instead we need to do what a dog would do in this situation except we need to modify it to suit us big human beings.

So when your puppy bites the first thing you need to do is give a big yelp - so it becomes a big 'Ow'. This should be done quite quickly after the bite. Don't leave it too long or your puppy will have no idea what you are yelping at. If the puppy doesn't react then you need to be louder.

If your puppy then bites again then grab it by the scruff of the neck and shake slightly. Remember this is a little puppy - you don't need to get aggressive here - just a slight shake will do and make sure you do a bit of a growl as well to show your displeasure.

If your puppy bites again then flip it over onto its back and hold it down until the puppy stops struggling. This will indicate that the puppy has submitted. Again, just don't get too heavy handed. Be firm but gentle.
