Taking Care of your Mastiff puppy

Puppy-proof your house

Puppies, mastiff puppies including, are curious creatures and will explore every nook and cranny of your house. You need to make sure your puppy can explore safely by

--Storing all poisonous household items out of the puppy's range. These include household cleaners, laundry detergents, bleach, disinfectants, insecticides, cleaning fluids, fertilizers, mothballs, antifreeze, insect poisons, and rat poisons. You should also get in the habit of keeping the toilet lid down so the puppy doesn’t accidentally get a drink of toilet cleaner.

--Put all poisonous plants out of the puppy’s range. Following is a partial list of plants that are potentially dangerous to animals: Aloe Vera, Amaryllis, Asparagus Fern, Autumn Crocus, Azalea, Caladium,Calla Lily, Castor Bean, Chinese Evergreen, Cineraria, Clematis, Philodendron, Cyclamen, Daffodil, Dieffenbachia, Elephant Ears, Ivy, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lily, Lily of the Valley, Mistletoe, Morning Glory, Narcissus, Nightshade, Oleander, Onion, Plumosa Fern, Poinsettia, Primrose, Rhododendron, Sago Palm, Tomato Plant (green fruit, stem and leaves), Yew.

--Get down on all fours and look at your house from your puppy’s point of view. Are there loose nails, plastic bags, or dangling electrical or blind cords that your puppy can get into? Remove or move anything that looks hazardous to your mastiff puppy.

--If you have a balcony, high deck, porch, or loft, make sure the puppy can’t get to those areas unsupervised or install shielding so the puppy can’t slip through the banister openings and fall

--Make sure there are no sharp objects such as pins, needles, or thumbtacks on the floor or anywhere your puppy could get them and swallow them.
