Puppy Love and Heartbreak in Denver

The male chow mix and the female German shepherd mix were spotted together recently the last few days and were prowling the streets in Denver. This morning the female German shepherd mix got hit by a car and died immediately after in the busy streets of Chambers Road near East 52nd Avenue in Denver. The male chow mix then sat down next to this dead dog to keep watch over its companion.

The Denver Animal Care & Control think both are stray dogs. They didn’t have any identification tags attached to them. Doug Kelly, its Director said, when a companion dies, the dog usually sits next to them and guards the dead dog. It is however uncommon to see them in the middle of the road. He thinks these two dogs might have been involved in a romance.

The animal control officials after being called by the police removed the dogs. Before that two good Samaritans helped the efforts by blocking the traffic in the lane in which the dogs were lying. Another one took the surviving dog to the median so it won’t get hurt also.

Bill Taylor, Patrolman said he tried to remove the dog himself, but the male dog didn’t want him to get close to the dead dog, it seemed to be upset. The dog was also not real friendly with the animal control staff, but they finally took the dog to the nearest shelter. If the dog persists with this behavior it will be difficult for them to give it for adoption, so probably might need some dog training. Maybe the dog was upset because of the death of its companion, might show good behavior later on.
