Puppy Training Tips for the frustrated Owner

After years of raising puppies, I can speak from some experience. Of course I often "saved back" the pups I wanted to keep, but many times there were puppies who left my property at the age of 8-10 weeks, and already had some good "learning" under the belt. One of the most frustrating things that new owners can face is the puppy habit of chewing and biting at the fingers and everywhere else they can reach...those puppyteeth are needle sharp!

I found that the best way to control this behavior is, as I stated in my latest blog post at aeonity (http://www.aeonity.com/knewf) to quickly and firmly grasp the nape of the neck in a "pinch" that is sharp enough to elicit a yelp from the puppy. Do not "shake" the puppy and don't "hang" the puppy, simply grasp the back of his neck and pinch him, firmly, and accompany this with the "growly voice" , firmly saying "NO!". This is very similar to the behavior of the mother dog, and you would be surprised how quickly the puppy learns not to use his teeth.

It is best to follow this up with a presentation of your hand to the puppy, encouraging him to lick, rather than chew..and with soft gentle praise when he "nuzzles" your hand rather than biting!

This is great information. I wish I'd know this when my Lab was a puppy.
