The purchase of a home security system is definitely one of the most crucial things a homeowner will tackle. In order to insure the security system purchased is right for your circumstances, a homeowner must do some research. Just because the home you recently purchased already has a home security system installed, does not mean it is the best system for your particular needs. Don't rush into the purchase. Contact several companies (at least 3) and have them conduct a security survey at your residence and provide you with recommendations on whether your system should be hard-wired or wireless? Should it be monitored by an off-site service,or just equipped to alert someone in close proximity to your residence? I am going to cover some of the things this home survey should involve, which I hope will help you to make an intelligent decision and provide you with the best home security system for your residence and your money.

Things You Need

  • Knowledge of your home features.
  • Knowledge of your present home security system if any.

Things the Security Survey Should Cover

  1. To provide the best home security system for your needs, the survey should cover such items as the type of home you live in, the size of the home, the number and type of doors and windows, whether you have a basement and whether your home is built on a conventional foundation or on a slab and whether you presently have a security system installed.
  2. Now they will want to know things such as how many levels or stories are in your home, how many bedrooms, the location of all entry points, and do your doors have deadbolt locks.

  3. Now take a look at your windows. Are any windows not visible from the street? Are any windows hidden by bushes or trees? These could provide hiding places for a potential intruder and made need special attention.

  4. Other things to consider are whether you have children or pets. This information could be used to determine whether you use motion detection and some type of chime on the doors you alert you when children enter or leave the home. Do you travel and how often. The type of telephone system in your home and whether a standby cellular connection is necessary.

  5. In addition to protection against an intruder, you should consider fire and carbon monoxide detection. Home security systems can also provide an alerting system for emergency medical services if there is someone in your home that has has special medical needs.

One Final Note

Take your time and do some research and your home security system purchase will serve your needs for many years to come.
