If U.S. Senator Bob Casey gets his way they will, as he wants Motorcycles included in Cash for Clunkers proposed bill.

In Washington DC on Thursday U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) introduced legislation to expand the existing CONSUMER ASSISTANCE TO RECYCLE AND SAVE ACT or better known as the Cash for Clunkers bill to include the purchase of motorcycles. Turn in your less efficient gas-guzzling car for a very fuel efficient Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson is located in Bob’s state of Pennsylvania so he is looking at ways to help save jobs. In factHarley-Davidson operates its largest manufacturing facility in York, Pennsylvania employing over 2,200 people. Harley is the third largest employer in York County.

Bob’s point in this is that motorcycles are actually much more efficient than the best gas savings cars as the larger motorcycles get from 40-50MPG with the smaller bikes being even better. The inclusion of motorcycles into the bill follows its intent helping the United States move away from its dependence on foreign sources of oil.

Senator Casey’s bill, Green Transportation Efficiency Act of 2009 (GreenTea) is the same as the Cash for Clunkers bill except for the addition of giving $2,500 vouchers for the purchase of a new motorcycle. The current Cash for Clunkers legislation gives vouchers from $1,500 to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new car or truck when turning in your less fuel-efficient vehicle. The greater the difference between what you are turning in as compared to what you are purchasing makes you eligible for a higher voucher amount.

Again the main difference between the GreenTea Act and similar “Cash for Clunkers” bills is that Senator Casey’s bill allows a trade-in for a new fuel-efficient motorcycle."
