Purchasing domains is the devil.

Is it me or is just about every damn domain that has any relevance been purchased already?

Recently I have been trying to purchase a domain name for a new company that I am setting up (which shall remain unnamed as no doubt someone will try to buy it) however I can confirm that this domain was “computer” orientated so I knew it was going to be hard to find a purchase.

It amazes me how just about everything you can think of is gone, so you end up either a; trying to be clever and think of something niche or b; buying something with a hyphen in it (and most of them are gone anyway).

The sad truth is that most people that buy domains don’t even use them; they just buy then to make a fast buck. There was one particular domain I was desperate to get, when I looked up the URL, there was a holding page stating that the URL was available, so I emailed the guy with a general enquiry requesting a price. Yeah sure, he said. You can have it for £3000.00. What a joke, it wasn’t being used and neither did he have any intention of using it. It wasn’t even that good a domain to be honest but it was related to our company to that’s why I wanted it.

I think that there should be some sort of rule implemented where you have to have a valid reason for purchasing a domain. I appreciate that this would be tricky to implement but there needs to be change in order to stop jack the lads just sitting at their laptops, buying up everything that some people could genuinely use.

I know that in the past that large organisations have successfully managed to “claim” their domains back (and quite rightly so) but let’s be honest, most of us can’t do this.

Maybe if you trademark a name, that would guarantee you the rights to the domain, whatever country it is from. Maybe you are only allowed to register a certain amount of domains per user. Maybe there should only be one organisation you can purchase domains from and when you do, you have to provide proof of why you are purchasing them and what they will be used for.

If anyone has any ideas of feelings on this issue then I am all ears. In the end I got so fed up with looking that I just passed all the details onto my IT Support company and let them handle it for me. I bet they really appreciated that.

Domain purchases need monitoring and policing, in fact the internet as a whole needs better policing, but that’s another Hub Page....

You will be lucky if you find the domain name you want.
