Not much for the "goodies". Who wants to feed something to our pets that isn't fit for human consumption? Has the make up (grains and gluten) to be on a recall list. This product isn't a treat at all!

gave my dogs this treat Easter Sunday and came home to vomit and diahrea mess. Any one else experience this?

I had the same experience this past weekend with my dog. I have fed him this treat before but just bought a new pack of them last week and gave him one Thursday and Friday night he was sick with diarrhea and vomiting. He seems to be doing better this morning thank goodness.

My Schnauzer had the same situation. I gave him on Saturday Night and on Sunday evening he vomitted 4 times in my bedroom, the place where he's never vomitted before. Thanks be to God, he's doing fine right now. I'm so afraid of food recall.

The recall is very serious and awfully scarry!

I gave my chihuahua one of the regular busy bones(close enough to the dental one) and she has been having black diarrhea for the passed 3 days and just this morning she threw up and i believe there is blood in it. This is the last thing we gave her before she started vomiting and having diarrhea. I hope she'll be okay. Do not feed these treats to your dogs!!!

Chrissy,

What else have you been feeding? This doesn't sound like a good situation. Please see a vet with your dog.

My dog has also had a very bad reaction to Purina Busy Bones. I got a 7oz bone free with the purchase of Purina canned food. As it was labeled for a large dog, I only allowed my 25lb Sheltie to eat half. What a mistake this has turned out to be!!! My poor dog has had vomiting and diarrhea for the last two days. I have him on Pedialyte and small meals of plain rice with a little chicken broth. If he is not doing better by morning, we are headed to the vet! I plan on contacting Purina directly about this as well as PetSmart where I got the bone.

Shk52,

The Purina pet food will cause these same reactions due to the use of corn, wheat, and soy. Pull the grains from the diet and all should return to normal.

Wow! I wish I would have read all of these comments prior to buying purina busy bone dental bones. Last night I gave my lab and lab mix these bones, and they both have been vomiting and had diarrhea since. At this point, I am going to attempt to feed them a diet of broth and rice to see if this will alleviate the problem; however, if they do not begin to show signs of improvement I am going to contact the vet.

My dog had the same problem....diarrhea! He ate it on Sat, still sick on Tues. Why am I not seeing a recall anywhere??

I just emailed Purina off their website. This is unacceptable!

My wife and I went out to Pet Barn here in El Paso to try and find a good product to clean our dog's mouth and make his breath better, the employee suggested this bone. We gave him the first of the 2-pack a few days ago and only let him eat half the bone which seemed to work good only giving him a slightly discolored stool, but last night we gave him the other whole bone and he has been yacking up all night. Is there something wrong with the bone? It seems like every dog that has taken one of these has the same problems and I for one want to know why and what is being done. If it was known that these problems occur then why would you keep the product on the shelf?

I'm in contact with Purina right now about this product. Unfortunately, they don't seem all that concerned, even though I sent them the link to this page. All they did was offer me coupons. I asked them to either recall or put a warning on the packaging.

They asked and I've offered to send them a piece of the remaining bone to test in their labs. More to come on this. Have also informed Target, where i bought this, and they are currently investigating.

I HIGHLY recommend all of you to also contact Purina to complain about this product. There's power in numbers! They actually had the gaul to tell me "This product has been used by many thousands of dogs all across the country with excellent results." In other words, no news is good news in their minds. If they don't hear from you, they think everything's ducky.

Please visit this link and share your experience with them: https://offers.purina.com/ContactUs/ContactUs.aspx

If possible, hang onto the packaging and your receipt, as they may ask you for the UPC #, expiration date and packaging code.

i contacted them already and have not received anything back, i think that everyone should contact them and let it be know not to buy this product. Also, i know now that almost all of my neighbors have used this and with the same results, 3-5 days of soft stool and vomit from their dog so this is not a small case

I also want to encourage everyone to write an appropriate online review for this product everywhere possible, so other owners can be aware of your experience and know before purchasing this product. I've placed reviews on Amazon, Epinions and a couple of other sites.

I gave my dog 1/2 schizu/rat terriers one last night half way through the bone i took it away. He has been throwing up and pooping all night. He would not eat this morning. He seems better now. He has eaten Denta Bones w/no problems. I will never buy the Busy Bone again.

This is the second time I've tried busy bones on my lab. The first time she got sick we thought is was related to something else. We were looking for new treats for her last weekend and figured we'd try them again this time since she has been better for some time now. We gave the busy bone and ate the whole thing very quickly. She started with diarhea the next day and is still not right and it's 4days later. The only thing she had in this time frame was the new busy bone. I will never give her another and told everyone else I know not to use them.

Has been four weeks since I submitted a portion of the remaining bone to Purina for testing in their labs. Have recommend they either place a warning on the packaging, informing consumers that it could cause diarrhea, vomiting and/or seizures, or pull it from store shelves altogether. Please please please contact them via the link about to share your story so they know mine is not an isolated incident. I've also shared a link to this page with them, but they may not take the time to come to this site.

Update 4/29/08: Purina called me today; they are not taking any action on this, as they don't see there's a widespread problem with the product. They tested in their labs and concluded that it's probably just an allergy or sensitivity with our dogs. They said they haven't really received any/many complaints. I told them about this site and other sites where I've seen complaints, but that wasn't enough for them to take action. Personally, I think I'm going to discontinue purchasing their products.

My dog threw up three times today after giving him the busy bone last evening, he didn't eat his dinner today. I can't believe this many people had issues and they don't have to do anything. I don't have my packaging but I will still send an email to purina.

Charlie's Mom  says:

Yep, same story. I have a terrier mix (approx 30 lbs) and he got sick about 3 hours after he at it. He's been grazing on grass until he could vomit about 4 times. He seems better now, about an hour after his last vomit. Haven't seen any diarrhea issues yet.

Jessie's Mom  says:

I've been online searching for possible reasons for my Chesapeak lab (Jessie) to have black stool and vomiting, and realized I fed her and her two full size black lab brothers a bone like this 3 days ago. It wasn't Purina brand so be aware ---- it looks like ALL of these bones can be harmful!!

Mari  says:

Oh no!!! Today was my schnauzers birthday and I gave him that bone for a gift...... he ate half of it and then i took it away from him. I hope he doesnt get sick. Can anyone offer any advice??? what should I do??

cafn8me  says:
6 months ago

Keep an eye on him. If he gets sick, it may last a few days...keep him calm/comfy and put him on a bland diet (e.g., white rice, chicken broth), which is what I did. Then, please please please file a complaint with Purina (link is in one of my previous posts above). Purina has to report any complaints to the FDA.

cafn8me  says:

Sorry your dog got sick too. Hopefully the FDA will intervene on this soon. Still waiting to hear back, but it could take a while. In the meantime, I no longer see this product on Purina's site...interesting! http://www.purinabusy.com/

We gave our 3 yr old yorkie-poo this treat a few weeks ago. She mainly carried it around in her mouth and licked it. But a few days ago she started eating it and completely ate it that evening. She threw up once on Monday and then Tuesday night she threw up again and it looked like there was blood in the vomit. She woke us up at 1:00am Wednesday morning throwing up again but this time it was all red. She threw up again at 7am Wednesday morning and I rushed her to our vet as soon as they opened. She was severly dehydrated and her digestive tract was higly inflamed. They had to keep her all day to run an IV of fluids. She's doing much better now but a very scary situation. We're not 100% sure the bone caused this but after reading these posts, I'm almost positive that's what it was.

cafn8me  says:

Had a friend contact Purina regarding this product, asking why it was no longer showing on the website. This was their response on 7/8/09:

~~~~~~~
Please also know that the Purina(r) Busy Bone (r) brand Chew Treat Dental For Large Dogs was discontinued as of June, 2009.
~~~~~~~

Unfortunately, their distributors are still selling the version for Small/Medium dogs, which I think is the bigger culprit, based on the above and other postings I've seen throughout the web.

I think everyone should send Purina their vet bill with these comments. This is terrible. Our pets are like children to us.

Alex  says:

How you people can blame the bones without taking your dogs to the vet baffles me. I can not understand why you so called "pet lovers" would allow your pets to have vomiting and diarrhea for several days and not take them to be checked. The problem sounds to me like bad pet owners and not necessarily the bone. Those of you that took your dogs to the vet are responsible and I am not directing my comment to you. There is a reason that the bones are labled for large or small dogs. Do not give a small dog a large bone-even if you "cut it in half"-it is still much larger in thickness and is too rich for their small bodies to handle. I have given these bones to my 6 dogs for several years and we have never had a problem, but I also know that I have to watch them (like the package says) and make sure they do not eat them too fast-because if they do, they can choke-just like your children can-no difference. You have to keep an eye on them and if you know your dogs are aggressive eaters and gobble things whole, then why in the world would you give them a bone in the 1st place? You wouldn't give a small child something they could choke on if you knew they liked to put things in their mouth, why would you give an agressive dog a bone he could swallow whole?!? Purina does not have anything on recall and if you look at these dates of some of the comments, the 1st comments were left over 2 years ago when the recall was going on with other pet food brands-not this bone-so it makes you wonder what else they were feeding. And then I go back to my original question why in the world would you not take your dogs to the vet it if they were having such horrible problems?!? "Pet Lovers" Yeah right...

cafn8me  says:
4 months ago

Alex, I followed package instructions to give my dog one bone and I called the vet when he got sick, as I'm sure several others did as well. We aren't stupid and we do care for our pets. In my situation, they advised me not to bring him in, but rather, keep him on a bland diet and only bring him in if the diarrhea persisted more than three days. Your situation is obviously the exception to the rule, and I'm glad you didn't experience what we did. Please think next time you post--you probably offended a lot of people here.

And yes, Purina has taken the large bone off the market, per their Customer Service folks. Product is also gone from www.purinabusy.com. And yes, a case is still pending with the FDA. How do I know? I'm the one who filed it.

cafn8me  says:
4 months ago

Alex, forgot to mention...this product has never formally been recalled...I confirmed this with Purina. It's still out there, Purina just took it down from their site within the past few months and the FDA complaint was filed in May. I'll continue to work hard to communicate our situations to ensure more pets don't get sick. You are entitled to your opinion.

Elaine  says:

I agree with Alex we give our lab these several times a week and he tells us at night when he wants one. Granted he is a very tall lab and weighs in at 112, so maybe his body handles it better, I don't know. Still I don't think they should be recalled for those of us who have dogs that enjoy them.

Elaine  says:

I must add a PS to my above post we give our dog the regular Busy Bones not the Dental ones, so I don't know if thats the differance.

cafn8me  says:

Elaine, this page is specifically about the dental version of the treats--the star-shaped ones as you see in the image above. I don't believe the other heart shaped version has had any issues, but I could be wrong.

Jessica  says:

I agree. We should start a recall! Made my puppy throw up, but figured it was because she was young. I gave the 2nd bone to a friend who has an adult dog that chowed it down, and threw it up!

They were the medium size treats, maybe it is the mint? too much. I dont know but spread the word!!!

cafn8me  says:
3 months ago

Jessica, please submit a complaint to Purina and encourage your friend to do the same so we can finally get the small/medium version of this treat off the market. Please don't leave it up to others to complain. We need your help. I've included links above--just scroll up.

I can't believe all of the problems that I have read here! Purina needs to be sued. I didn't give my dog the dental bone but I gave her the busy rollhide one. She ate a small amount of it on Saturday. On Sunday she became ill and threw up once. I took the bone away immediately. On Monday she threw up again and had diarrhea. She is going to the vet today because the diarrhea has gotten much worse. She still continues to vomit in small amounts, too. I am going to file a complaint with Purina right away. Thanks to all of you for your comments.

Eric  says:

Having the same issued with my dog today. I gave him a treat after work and when I got back from the gym he had puked by the front door. He coward his head as if he would be in trouble, but it wasn't his fault. I knew it had to be the treat.

The poor guy has been vomiting bile all evening. I hope he doesn't experience the diahhrea that most of the blogs have reports. I'll definitely not buy this product again.

Mary  says:
3 weeks ago

I commented previously on problems with Purina rollhide busy bones. My dog ended up spending 5 days in the hospital and I spent over $400 hundred dollars in vet fees. Thankfully, I got her to the hospital when I did, this bone had pretty much poisoned her for lack of a better word. The vet said that if I had waited much longer to treat her she mignht not have made it. If your dog has eaten these bones, and appears sick, please seek vet attention right away.

Dede  says:
7 days ago

I thought my dog had been poisoned with rat poison because he had vomiting and diahhrea and started vomiting blood and having black stools. I rushed him to the vet and they determined it wasn't rat poison. He had however eaten an entire rollhide. He was feeling much better until he chewed a little busy bone rollhide and threw up in the middle of the night again and has been mopey all day. Now I strongly suspect the rollhide. He's been eating them regularily with out any problem-I'm thinking it's a bad batch. RECALL Please!
