I just started feeding my older cats (8yrs old) this food about a month ago and one of my cats died tonight for no apparent reason. Could it be the food??? She was perfectly healthy and active an hour before, what could have happened?

C,

Could you please tell me a little more about your cat's death?  I'm afraid without additional information such as what was happening just before the death, etc. it is really hard to tell what happened.

To answer your question if Cat Chow could have been the cause of your cat's death, the answer is "Yes".  There have been so many cat's lives lost to Cat Chow that there is a Class Action filed against this company.

I'm sorry for your loss.  I'm sorry yet another pet may have lost it's life at the hands of the pet food industry.

She was acting fine and has been active and healthy all her life. There has been no unusual behavior to suggest an illness or she would have been taken to the vet. I left for dinner and went by the store on the way home, so I was gone about two hours. She was running around the room with her brother when I was getting ready to leave, so she was fine before I left. When I got home, I found her on her side in the bathroom on her side already gone. It was a bit of a shock and very unexpected, and very very upsetting. Her eyes were very dialated, around her mouth was very wet, and her gums were really white. Other than that, there was nothing weird about her, no vomiting, no diarhea, no nothing. She showed no signs of illness.

C,

The white gums is a bit of a concern.  Did you notice her acting "scared" before you left?  Sometimes this "scared" reaction is noticed before any other symptom.

I would suggest that you check the gums of the remaining cats. Could be that we are seeing signs of worms.

I checked them last night, they are light pinkish-white. Not white like hers were. Where would they have gotten worms?? They are all completely indoor cats.

Could the gums have changed due to shock associated with a stroke or heart attack?? I just don't see how it could have been worms which seems like it would have effected her behavior before that. Or does it just happen suddenly? Like I said she was fine two hours before I found her, she was running around.

Sorry I forgot to respond to the "scared" part of your question. She is a some what skidish cat anyways, but she was out and about. I have noticed her verbalizing more the last two days, but not acting scared. If anything she has been wanting more and more attention.

C,

I would suggest that you stop at the local feed store or vet's office and pick up some worm medicine for your cats.  You may cary the worms or lara into the house on your shoes, grocery sacks, pet food containers, etc.  Worming at least twice a year is a good idea.

Worms begin to ingest parts of the cat's stomach and intestinal linings slowly making little holes.  These holes or anema can cause cats and dogs great problems including death.

Worming your pets is a low cost investment to be able to rule out something as simple as worms or as bold as your pet food being toxic.

Cats and dogs generally don't suffer heart-attack or stroke.  These are symptoms brought on by outside influences and are usually not seen in animals.  Your little kitty not feeling well might have been the reason for the attention seeking...what ever the cause of illness.  Cats are great maskers of illness and usually seek seclusion when not well.

I'm leaning more towards the possibility of worms in this case.  Not to say that other issues might not be at work, as well.

I am not a vet nor am I am trying to give vet type advice.  I am only relating my observations as a pet owner, vet tech, and professional groomer.

Please keep me advised.

I went and picked up dewormer from the store, it only deworms hookworms, but I went ahead and treated them with it. Is this sufficient it was all I could find, or do I need to go get another kind from the vet or petstore?

I've done alot of reading and talked to one of my friends who is in vet school. She send judging by the situation her best guess was an aneurysm or embolism, since it was so sudden and Sadie had been acting normal when I left.

C,

Good job! The Hookwom meds should do just fine. You should do a follow up treatment in a week to 10 days. If you see what looks like rice around the tail then you will need another type of worm meds.

Your friend should be able to advise you about gum color and other general health issues.

I'm proud of you for acting so quickly.

The rice looking worms are tapeworms correct? Would I see those being expelled due to the dewormer?? I haven't seen them up to this point and I would know since my little boy cat likes to curl up with his butt in my face at night. What about roundworms, would I see any sign of these if they have this infection?

C,

Baby tapeworms look like rice, that is correct. What isn't correct is that your worm meds for hook worms and round worms will take care of tape worms, too. If you don't see any rice around the tail and rump area before the worming meds were given then you probably don't have to treat for tapeworms. Tapeworms are treated with a different type of wormer.

You may not see results of the wormer until in the morning or later in the day depending on how fast acting the meds are that you purchased. Some meds are slow working while others are very prompt. How fast a worm med works has nothing to do with it's ability to cure the problem.
